I have been working at Investment Company Institute full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, highly educated staff and supporting an industry and mission that is critical to the future retirement goals of people. Provide competitive pay and great benefits.

    Cons

Very demanding environment. A bit traditional but still have opportunities to have fun. Not big on working at home or casual dress but other benefits certainly offset these areas.

    Advice to Management

Expansion into global is the way to go; keep communicating and interacting with staff on a regular basis.

I worked at Investment Company Institute full-time

    Pros

Very inclusive of the whole Institute. Large for an association and has a more corporate culture which I enjoyed.

    Cons

Sometimes judgements were made based on the department you were in and not on the value of the idea.

    Pros

Work with very intelligent Attorneys and get to work on important legal issues affecting investment companies. Great work experience on drafting SEC comment letters and meeting many attorneys in the '40 Act world.

    Cons

The internship program was not very well organized in the sense that it was up to you to find projects and specifically ask for review on your work. However, many had work to give and would give feedback if you ask.

I worked at Investment Company Institute full-time

    Pros

Staff is very smart, fun and dedicated. Lots of interaction with members, regulators, etc. Couldn't imagine a better group of people to work with.

    Cons

CEO places lots of emphasis on "family values" but when it really hits the fan, speaks with great sympathy and then asks why the assignment hasn't been done. Not a great manager, not a great mentor. Doesn't want to hear about problems with the organization

    Advice to Management

    Walk the talk.

    Pros

ICI is a great place to begin a career. The research department is very stress-free and the co-workers are smart and friendly. It is a great stepping stone for pursuing investment research/analysis as you are able to learn a lot about the industry if you have the desire. Work-life balance is beyond amazing so my advise would be to go for a certification or grad school.

    Cons

There is a fair amount of meticulous work that can be demeaning at times. Very little room for growth so there is a high turnover of around 2-4 years (not necessarily a con).

    Advice to Management

Add an "analyst" position. Understand that some of the work is demeaning for bright college graduates and work with the employees to make those tasks more efficient. Consider limiting new hires and raising salaries.

    Pros

Relaxed environment but plenty of engaging work to do. The leadership is great and creates a very close knit family type of community and gives interns plenty of exposure to the industry.

    Cons

It is located in Washington DC and I don't like winter.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Investment Company Institute full-time

    Pros

If you start out in a senior position, you'll be well taken care of and recognized for your contributions. If you start at the bottom and try to work your way up, forget about being compensated by industry standards.

    Cons

See above. ICI tries to pay junior staff the least amount as possible, which is a joke considering the big bucks behind their members. It is a place ruled largely by old, white men. There is questionable work-life balance too.

    Advice to Management

You are hurting yourself by not offering competitive salaries. Those talented employees will soon leave and you'll be left wondering what happened. Tame your ego; ICI actually isn't that great a place.

    Pros

Interesting work with a good sense of camaraderie and an engaged membership.

    Cons

Often, it's too many projects in too many directions. Prioritization would help.
