    I worked at Ion Torrent Systems as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good pay
    Good bonus'
    Well informed upper management
    Employees treated well
    Lunch provided every day
    Management has good understanding of the "Big Picture"
    Great location
    Can be a fun place to work
    Supportive co-workers
    Extremely nice people
    Everyone is dedicated and works hard
    Easy to fit in

    Cons

    Employees over-worked.
    Mid-Management struggles with day-to-day research activities.
    Extremely redundant work (R&D), except for mechanical engineers.
    You are expected to know everything as soon as you walk in the door.
    Constantly looked down upon by managers if you aren't at least a Scientist II.
    Training is sub-par.
    Their technology will NEVER catch up to Illumina's technology, Ion Torrent is going to lose value more and more over time and eventually become extinct.
    If you haven't been an employee there for at least two years, job security is extremely unstable, don't count on keeping your job.
    The founder of Ion Torrent is an extreme nut-case who walks in and starts screaming demands at everybody and has irrational expectations that sometimes don't make sense either. He is VERY selfish and very money-driven. If you are a new employee, or not somebody important, be prepared to be looked down upon by him, he won't respond to you even if you say Hi.

    Advice to Management

    Keep on truckin'. Have a back-up career plan because your jobs will eventually vanish due to the lack of demand for Ion Torrent products.

    I worked at Ion Torrent Systems full-time

    Pros

    Exciting technologies with great potentials;
    Attracted many smart people, but most of them left after Thermofisher merger;
    Many openings due to people's departure;
    Was great in marketing and selling itself to Life Tech and then Thermo;

    Cons

    Lost the startup mindset; integrated into the stupid large company trap;
    Too many heavy title people without skills;
    losing battle against Illumina;

    I worked at Ion Torrent Systems as an intern

    Pros

    Most of the positions are entry-level for young scientists, BS, MS, PhD. I worked as an intern for a summer during college and was treated very well. Pretty outgoing group, very friendly. Higher-ups are accessible and seem to like their work.

    Cons

    Can be a bit crazy at times, but I worked in the early start-up days when we were trying to make deadlines. A lot of us put in extra hours, but they were incentivized appropriately with bonuses and food.

    Advice to Management

    Don't lose that early culture that rewarded risk-taking and encouraged collaboration across all levels of the company. Employees that are happy to come to work produce better results.

  4. "Ion had an amazing team of people, a singular level of narrow focus, and was a joy to work on."

    Pros

    The technology and team of people gathered to work on it were top notch. This company was made to innovate and get acquired, and it did.

    Cons

    Post acquisition, the company is a little more laid back and the team has shifted toward people willing to run the marathon rather than sprint to success.

    Advice to Management

    Invest heavily in hiring software management who knows how to hire a team that will get results. Systemic failures to recruit combined with perpetually 2nd priority, directionless software planning and management will kill this division permanently due to brain drain and then take the products it touches with it.

    Pros

    Some smart people working here.

    Cons

    Money is good, but you have to work long, hard hours to achieve it. Can be very political. There are clearly favorites.

    Negative Outlook

    I have been working at Ion Torrent Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    The staff are generally a great group of people. Very healthy bonus program if you're willing to work long hours. Free lunches Mon-Thurs.

    Cons

    Long hours are pretty much expected. Very little bonus opportunity if you can't work long hours due to family commitments. Senior management is totally unrealistic about progress goals and essentially ignores feedback from staff and middle management. Company founder, while brilliant, has only an email presence and contributes nothing but inflammatory propaganda.

    Advice to Management

    Listen! Substitute great products for ridiculous timelines.
