    Pros

Brilliant colleagues, fantastic writers, and many great mentors. You can do (almost) as much as you want very early in your career and the stakes are often quite high. Incredible support staff that fires on all cylinders when it counts.

    Cons

Perfectionism and a willingness to leave no stone unturned for clients = unpredictable and often difficult schedules. The intensity level can give you a rush but also impact health, relationships and other non-work aspects of life. You need a good support network to thrive.

    Advice to Management

Hold onto experienced staff: they are priceless.

    I worked at Irell & Manella full-time

    Pros

Great salary, wonderful attorneys and staff. Irell seeks to make all it's employee's as comfortable as possible so that they can do their work more efficiently.

    Cons

Although you don't have to work more than a 40 hour week, it is strongly expected that you do. Late nights can be leaving as late as midnight, maybe even later.

    Advice to Management

love the management! Can't really say anything negative, really. Keep up the good work!

I have been working at Irell & Manella full-time

    Pros

Good experience is available to the select few. Bonuses are good.

    Cons

Most associates get triaged out of the firm fairly early in their careers. The ones that remain are worked to death, often while those who are slated for triage are sitting around with too little to do. Firm is run by sociopaths who have little in their lives but work and expect the same from you. Non-lockstep bonuses are further insult to those who slave away for 3000+ hours per year. And health benefits are appallingly chintzy.

    Advice to Management

It is expensive and inefficient to churn through people the way you do, but I suspect it's a matter of ideology/pride at the firm that "only the strong survive." Clients do pay for this in the end but don't seem to mind.

    Pros

everyone is very friendly and nice. always willing to help. casual Fridays, monthly breakfast, and location is nice since it is right across the mall. everyone keeps to themselves which is nice.

    Cons

no room to grow, paralegals are mean.

    Advice to Management

Recruiting and HR needs to get over themselves and stop walking around like they run the show.

I worked at Irell & Manella full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Hardworking, brilliant people

    Great full package of benefits

    Cons

OT is expected. Your worth is what you contribute in billable hours.

You have to work long hours since this is a typical law firm based on the billable-hour business model

    Pros

Compensation used to be marginally above market. Generous summer and other firm retreats. Spouses invited to all firm events (which is rare for big firms).

    Cons

Toxic atmosphere where associates brag about billing 3000 hours/year. Minimum billables are 2000. Female managing partner in the satellite office who undercuts work of associates and who most everyone hates but the firm can't seem to get rid of.

    Advice to Management

Have better oversight of partners in order to boost associate retention.

I have been working at Irell & Manella full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of perks outside of the work itself - gym in the building, nice break rooms/cafe with lots of drink options, In-n-Out day, trip to Angels stadium, great Christmas party, etc. Technically, OT is always optional, but there is definitely an implied pressure to do it. Very nice office, and IT, Office Services, etc. are always very responsive to requests.

    Cons

As a Case Assistant, most of the work is ridiculously mind-numbing, especially for bright college grads. Lots of data entry, assembling binders, renaming files, etc. At times, there will be days on end of just updating the same massive spreadsheet, and it's not uncommon for a project to get completely scrapped or changed on the whim of an attorney. There's really no getting around this.
Someone has to do it, it's just a pain to be the person who does.

Also, this position is designed to last a year, maybe two. There's really no room for growth until you become a paralegal or attorney.

I worked at Irell & Manella (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People work hard but know and care about each other. Having lateraled from a larger law firm, I found the human scale of the Newport office refreshing. If you do excellent work and do not shy from added responsibility, you get incredible opportunities to grow as a young attorney. The hours will be long, though.

    Cons

While some are still able to get the early litigation and trial experience that the firm is known for, it is becoming hard for all associates to get these experiences before their 3rd or 4th years. Work-life balance is a constant challenge as well. These concerns exist at most top firms, and Irell is probably a better place to work than most. The firm handles a lot of patent litigation, and most associates will take on a patent case or two -- this is either a pro or a con depending on your preferences.
