I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good compensation, talent is recognized and rewarded. Fairly laid back, hours and location are flexible.

    Cons

Management has very little direction outside of core engineering. Internal tools teams are fairly disjointed and lacking communication. Lots of duplicate work and lack of consistency.

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC

    Pros

Great coworkers, good work life balance, interesting problems to solve.

    Cons

Small company culture is being slowly eroded. Many things were in flux when I was laid off.

    Advice to Management

Do your best to maintain the culture, I could've easily worked there for years provided the culture doesn't change too much.

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fast paced, interesting work. Location is great. Outstanding Christmas party ( a holdover from Isilon days)

    Cons

EMC is dragging down the spirit of Isilon by continuous reorganizations and downsizing. Office environment is cubicle boring.

    Advice to Management

Make sure the people that are left are treated well and have a better working environment.

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time

    Pros

    - Great culture like start-up to give many engineers opportunity to propose and build their idea - Very smart people who understand full stack from hardware through OS to front-end and open to technical discussion all the time - Full software stack of OS, distributed file systems, cluster management, and UI, so you can find any expert right next to you. Its scale-out software is sophisticatedly implemented. -... Great socialization events

    Cons

    - Less benefits than other internet companies - A little frequent organizational changes

    Advice to Management

Encourage engineers to participate more in community to listen to what other companies have already done or are doing for what you want to improve upon as the products are expanding their verticals. Software ecosystems have become more open, but Isilon doesn't seem to actively interacting with relevant communities.

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time

    Pros

Engineering provides good pay, swag, food, and opportunities to socialize (e.g. parties, beer etc). strong engineering focus. large variety of perks. Most people are smart and want to do the right thing.

    Cons

Can be hard to find additional career opportunities, forcing alot of good people to seek jobs outside the company. Many corporate benefits (e.g. healthcare) are actually quite cheap and can be hard bureaucratically to navigate (FSA's, fitness benefits etc.). There is loads of red-tape when working with home office and any service providing organization can hide behind a timezone change instead of genuinely wanting... to help their customer.

    Advice to Management

Survey employees on the benefits they actually care about and make sure these organizations that provide them are resourced and accountable. Find out why employees leave.

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Challenging work on an established product. Forward thinking and a very profitable business segment of EMC.

    Cons

Process can be slow to move towards modern dev technologies. Platform is evolving and attrition is natural but saddening.

    Advice to Management

Increase salaries across the board. Leverage engineers to build great solutions.

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC

    Pros

Good place to work. Good opportunity to learn about NAS, and Isilon's technology. Pretty interesting stuff for technology buffs. The expectations are reasonable. Not a lot of direction. They just expect you to work independently. They do give you opportunities to show what you can do.

    Cons

Not a lot of cross-team communication, which can lead to duplication of effort, or, for example, two or more Tech. Writers interviewing the same SMEs for similar documentation.
