"Developed software for Isilon's OS OneFS."

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC

    Pros

Great coworkers, good work life balance, interesting problems to solve.

    Cons

Small company culture is being slowly eroded. Many things were in flux when I was laid off.

    Advice to Management

Do your best to maintain the culture, I could've easily worked there for years provided the culture doesn't change too much.

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC for less than a year

    Pros

Really great environment with smart, friendly, and helpful people Mentors are assigned to each intern and are very helpful Lots of parties and outings Really invest in their interns They save some of their most exciting projects for their interns. Heavy emphasis on work/life balance. Provided orca pass for commute

    Cons

Live downtown if you can, busing in and out of Seattle is time consuming.

    Advice to Management

Keep on doing what you're doing.

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC for less than a year

    Pros

Very friendly coworkers. There are interesting projects IF you can get into the right one. Good work life balance.

    Cons

Managers seem clueless at what employees to put on what jobs. Some engineers are resigned to producing power point slides for management all day, with little to no design work. Organization is uber management heavy

    Advice to Management

Make sure you know what employees to put on what jobs. Engineers don't want to make power point slides all day, accountants don't want to make power point slides all day either. Heck, what's with all of the power point slides anyway. Don't we have work to do?

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Best scale out NAS product on the planet. - Training at EMC / Isilon is second to none. Outside training, degree program available (on approval from mgmt) - Lots of internal resources willing to help - Decent 401K, Employee stock plan - 15% off market price on twice a year purchase - Good medical benefits - several plans to select from - EMC Federation gives some ability for interesting career moves (analytics, security, etc) - Chance to make some decent money if in Sales

    Cons

    - Not a great Work / Life Balance - EMC is a very results driven company - Unless promoted base pay does not change while you can bet on a yearly quota increase - Some of the 'old EMC Club' mentality still exists - Not easy to move up in Isilon Sales - lots of competition - probably would have to move out into other areas

I worked at Isilon, A Division of EMC for less than a year

    Pros

There are free drinks and snacks in the office. Everyone is friendly and will take time to talk to you if you have a question. Having a mentor to help you out is a huge plus, so you know that there's always someone you can go to talk to when you have questions or are stuck on something. Also, there are a ton of fun company events that you can go to such as cruises and baseball/soccer games. Has a good work-life balance, though.

    Cons

It can be difficult to find the information you need. Sometimes you feel like you're spending a lot of time trying to find the information rather than working on the solution.

    Advice to Management

The beginning of work was a little bit shaky, and a lot of time was spend trying to get myself situated with both my project and how the company operates. If there were some sort of intern quick start guide to explain that stuff, it would improve the experience.

    Pros

Fun problems to solve Great work-life balance Very relaxed office atmosphere Lots of fun intern activities to keep things exciting Senior engineers are very knowledgeable and helpful

    Cons

EMC's policies can get annoying (although people usually find a way to ignore them) Management seemed somewhat disconnected from engineering Not much training at the beginning (this is being addressed)

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

+ Smart engineers, many talented people + Friendly environment + Competitive salary + Flexible work hours, good work/life balance + Cool technology + Possibility to work at system level as well as application level

    Cons

    - No free food :) - PMs generally know nothing about the technical side of the product - EMC infrastructure is like a cancer - Not a lot of opportunities to develop new stuff from scratch - Paid parking - Benefits could be better - Code is rather eclectic

    Advice to Management

Don't distract engineers from getting the job done!

I have been working at Isilon, A Division of EMC full-time

    Pros

Good work life balance Plenty of work Pockets of normal people

    Cons

Employees seem to be appreciated by how much attention they get instead of the quality or volume of work they do. Feeling of unjustified favoritism for people and projects by many in engineering.

    Advice to Management

Give more respect to non blowhards who quietly and consistently deliver release after release.
