I worked at Island Hotel Newport Beach part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most of the people who work here and very genuine & kind. Free meals in cafeteria. Laundry washes your uniforms for you. Employee discounts.

    Cons

Upper management gives you a big speech at your orientation about how much they care about you. Fairly soon you realize you are really just a dollar sign. It is Irvine Company after all.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and actually SHOW you care. Give them a reason to want to strive to do better. Respect is a two way street.

I worked at Island Hotel Newport Beach full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interaction with a lot of people. Some of the work may overwhelm people but there people who are working there will help when needed. The people who are working there will treat the company as family.

    Cons

Direction of the company changes very quickly. Two years seems to be the turn around for most people at the company in salary positions. Expectations are very high in such that most people burn out with in the 6 months evaluation period.

    Advice to Management

Please respect your employee and salary positions. Understanding the culture will help develop a connection with others. Remember that employees have a life as well.

I have been working at Island Hotel Newport Beach part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Beautiful location, nice employees, free meal, scent uniforms, discounts for other restaurants on other properties

    Cons

Bad management, not much room for advancement, terrible parking, low pay, horrible clients

    Advice to Management

Management turns over quickly and they have a lack of organization were some mangers show favoritism and some employees are cliquish. Great start for a career but take what you can get and leave

I worked at Island Hotel Newport Beach full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are competitive and are the higher side of the market, location is good for a city center hotel, and the hotel has been recently remodeled. Many frontline staff members have been there since the Four Seasons days so the quality of service is excellent. Food is excellent. The ownership is solid and will probably never sell the hotel, it is the Irvine Company after all.

    Cons

Long hours, intense goals, expect to be pushed hard and not have much of a social life. Sales and Marketing was somewhat "Old School", which was both pro and con, very little work life balance. Mid level+Upper management turned over often. Staff would try to create a "family" environment however most management understood that numbers were king.

    Pros

Decent money and tips unless a coupon has been sent out by coorporate

    Cons

Management "socializes" with the staff and then is shocked when they aren't respected. Day shift doesn't reset the dining room. Coorporate creates specials and discounts without ever communicating to the actual restaurant staff.

    Advice to Management

Grow up, stop partying with your staff and run the restaurant.

    Pros

    Discount at sister property nearby

    Cons

Directors are horrible. No one is educated, everyone has moved up from a lowly position therefore management skills are limited.

    Advice to Management

    Get a bachelors degree

I have been working at Island Hotel Newport Beach full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The Irvine Company owns this hotel and that is a great company to have on your resume, it is one of the best hotels in the area, there are some very friendly staff members I will remember forever.

    Cons

Definitely lost its spark and went through a lot of changes recently and unfortunately made it take a few steps backwards. Some (or most) of the management do not care for their employees and only think about themselves when it comes to making decisions.

    Pros

great location, very friendly staff, HR is great

    Cons

parking is terrible, management needs training how to treat their employees, insurance is way expensive. CEO needs to pay more attention to what is happening in back of the house not just dollar signs

    Advice to Management

educate and train your higher up managers- they feel entittled
