I have been working at Isuzu North America as an intern

    Pros

Lots of down time, the people are great, and the work was easy. The town of Plymouth is a great place for lunches and to hang out with your coworkers after business hours.

    Cons

The experience was focused towards a technician's role in the company, rather than an engineering role. They move you forward to more important roles but at a slow pace and after a full summer there I was in the same role, where I learned about one system from the viewpoint of a technician rather than an engineer.

    Advice to Management

Quicken the pace for the interns who come through and make tougher jobs. If the task is easy everyday then the focus isn't as intense to promote interest in the activity.

I have been working at Isuzu North America as a contractor

    Pros

Flexible hours and casual Friday. Good people to work with. Fairly easy to get to from anywhere. Decent places for lunch.

    Cons

Top down direction from Japan. The Japanese culture will set up unrealistic requirements, then adjust as needed. Late night meetings are needed for conferences with people in Japan.

    Advice to Management

Give authority when assigning responsibility. Focus on the big picture and don't micro manage the minutia. The U.S. talent is more capable than they get credit for.

I have been working at Isuzu North America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good corporate location. Nice office. Friendly and polite american staff. Little management oversight of your work. Training opportunities must be self made.

    Cons

Incompetence. Low pay. Japan vs. America office mentality. Bureaucracy slows down all decisions and settled items are reopened without explanation. Since there is little chance of advancement, quality workers quit and move on to better companies. Workers who have remained have moved up without qualifications due to lack of outside competition for few openings.

    Advice to Management

Upper management is all shipped in on a rotational basis in order to enjoy a 2 year American vacation. They hide in closed offices with windows and do not associate with "local" staff. Advice to management; Go home.

Stable Company and very good benefits

    Cons

Could be much better if there were much direct communication between upper management in Japan and US

    Pros

Great benefits. Great people. Understanding management. Great place to learn and gain experience. Great variety of tools to learn and gain understanding of.

    Cons

Hostile senior management. They don't say hello when you do and they will criticize every aspect of your work. Promotions are based on seniority. Pay is way below market value. There is absolutely no room for growth. It's a sinking ship.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting based on seniority. If you're going to hire from the outside, at least hire competent people. No one likes to train their boss. Also, Mr. CEO, you can smile some more and at least say hi to the grunts doing the hard work.

    Pros

Isuzu's small company culture feels like "family" to most associates and provides an opportunity for your work to be highly visible, but you'll still enjoy all the benefits of a major national corporation.

    Cons

Salary may not be same compare to industry.
