I worked at Itron as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people working there. Nice building with a gym and a cafeteria, in a good location for getting fresh air.

    Cons

Completely restructured organization 9 times in 3 years. Never gave any new management plan a chance to take hold before throwing it out and replacing it. Announced a huge new project that would be the future of the company, then laid off a quarter of the company.

    Advice to Management

Commit to a plan. It takes two years before you can see the effects of your changes. Build teams; don't just try to throw bodies at a problem at the last second. If you want to use contractors but don't trust them to do their jobs, give them one year to show you if they're worth keeping and then hire them on full time.

I worked at Itron full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Okay benefits. Good cafeteria. Good parking. Good snow removal. Nice campus. Outdoor basketball court on site. Outdoor sand volleyball court on site.

    Cons

Management plays favorites: (Church group, friends, similar interests, etc).
Coworkers play favorites: (Church group, friends, similar interests, etc).
    Very rare promotions.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees when they say there is a problem between coworkers or a worker and a manager. Act aggressively on solving the problem immediately. Pick a path on products and stick to it. If it's not getting out fast enough, obviously it's being managed poorly. Too many middle and upper level managers who appear to only be looking out for their own advancement.

I have been working at Itron full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of cool technology. Lots to do. Very smart people.

    Cons

Products are no longer price-competitive in the market place. Need to change architecture with the team they have.
    Regional centers fight each other.

Glass ceilings. A very white male dominated company. Very different from high-tech companies in the silicon valley.

    Advice to Management

Buy new products. Figure out how to promote your good performers rather than your buddies.

I worked at Itron as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

You get to see different places on the job
On some Fridays employees would get together for a beer/play at he parking lot which was fun and help people get together

    Cons

You need to use your on car which put extremely high mileage... ( they pay for mileage though...)
As a person it didn't feel they care about you..
Most of the surveys are done in a guess way and if you try to be an engineer and try to get accurate readings so on, you are unlucky...

I worked at Itron (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People within teams can be quite friendly, team friendships tend to be close for good reason
Low expectations and low performance are widely tolerated making this an unremarkable place to hide out in the coming zombie apocalypse, I suppose that is a pro?

    Cons

Low quality and lacking breadth, stale engineering advisers hold the companies future potential hostage there are one or two cool exceptions to this of course
The company always seems on the cusp of the IoT market but does not have the people with contemporary skills to breakout
Partners with external agendas hold the company back and fearful management are unable to develop their own vision and plan for effective execution

    Advice to Management

I really don't think there is much that can be done to turn around the company without extensive and disruptive change at the management layer. Advice ? step aside to allow new flowers to bloom.
