    Pros

JCPenney is decent for a first job or a job through school but it's definitely not a career. They will give you raises but they are few and far between and will only be either 10 or 15 cents. Management can be considerate of your other schedules for school or other jobs.

    Cons

Customers are beyond rude, especially during the holidays and about their coupons. Management posts the schedule only 2-3 days in advance and often changes the schedule without notifying you. You work holidays, all of them but 2 or 3. You must work the holidays or you're fired. Raises are low and infrequent. You're expected to do far more than what you get paid for.

    I worked at J. C. Penney full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pension (for those hired before December 31, 2006), 401k, associate discount, flexibility with scheduling

    Cons

You can only get the full 25% associate discount when you use preferred methods of payment; management will have pets, making their opinions very biased. Pay is not fair at all; you need to be friends with the management when you get hired on to get a higher pay scale. Working holidays like Thanksgiving and around Christmas are horrible. I was never able to travel out of state around the holidays to visit family (and of course that was the ONLY time that all of my relatives would get together--we live all over).

    Advice to Management

Don't have biased opinions, and make sure to give everyone an equal opportunity. Don't pay someone more just because they are your friend. Don't have pets and believe everything that they say to you because guess what?! More than likely your "pet" is lying to you every step of the way to make THEMSELVES look good!

    Pros

Great people to work with, good employee discounts.

    Cons

Retail sales is slow most months of the year, so greatly reduced work hours outside of Christmas season.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring seasonal employees, give your fulltime employees the hours.

    Pros

The store has amazing discounts for employees, the company tries to foster some sense of workplace pride.

    Cons

Schedules were inflexible, high turnover, lack of accountability, unrealistic goals for sales associates, long hours.

    Advice to Management

Improve working conditions by making breaks longer, hire more employees and the credit card account target goal for sales associates needs to be removed.

I have been working at J. C. Penney full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Your coworkers and associates become your family. You become accustomed to putting up with those hard to deal with customers. So at some point it doesn't seem that bad. You always know your team understands the same struggle.

    Cons

It's retail. It is what you think it is.
Budget cuts limit hours. So, I'd hope for 40 hours but I'm grateful to get scheduled 38 because you'd rather allow more hours for your associates.
A schedule that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemies.
    Pay could always be better.
    And...the technology...needs vast improvements!

    Advice to Management

I am management. But to my ASM, it'd be nice to share some of that good schedule you give yourself. Being on a team means playing the same schedule. I'd love to get off earlier on Sundays or always work early on Monday. But instead I'm on the "team" because I can handle the store on my own.
