I worked at J Craig Venter Institute full-time

    Pros

Relaxed environment, depending on the department. Aims for innovative projects (both a pro and con). Great technical support, HR infrastructure. Generally friendly people. Lots of collaborations set up with other companies and organizations.

    Cons

Variations in funding between projects/teams. High turnaround of projects--can be shelved or restructured very quickly.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at J Craig Venter Institute full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The name. Benefits. Some good people. Looks ok in resume.

    Cons

Poor to non-existing mentoring. No support to those that put grants. Unrealistic expectations from scientific staff. No development. No focus. 'Go grab what you can' approach, even if no expertise.

    Advice to Management

Go learn management. Go learn science. Be successful yourself before requesting success to others. Upper management amateur and unethical.

I worked at J Craig Venter Institute full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of different projects to work on, exposure to world class scientists and research, great work environment.

    Cons

Combination of tall corporate management structure and mixture of tenured academics with middle management seemed to result in bad decision making and management quarrels.

    Advice to Management

None. I had little to no exposure to senior management, and having a mixture of academic and corporate management structure is surely a nightmare to control. Picking one or the other is probably a good idea. The company is quite a different place now, I imagine--this feedback is from a few years ago.
