I have been working at J Craig Venter Institute full-time

    Pros

The work environment is very relaxed (though cramped). There are still some great people and interesting projects around, but the morale is very low.

    Cons

There is absolutely no communication from upper management. Employees are not respected. The East Coast location (Rockville, MD) is probably going to gone very soon.

I worked at J Craig Venter Institute full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Relaxed work environment. You feel like you are making a difference in the advancement of genomics. Really smart people trying to do important work.

    Cons

Management tells the rank and file NOTHING. If you are fortunate, your boss may hear of changes through side channels and share the information with you. Decisions are made on a whim, with no consideration for practicality, business sense, or their effect on the workers. Currently they are on a mission to force all employees to the west coast by intimidation and starving the east coast of all resources. They went from...

I have been working at J Craig Venter Institute for more than a year

    Pros

The company has a flexible work environment. Dress is casual and co-workers are great.

    Cons

There is a lack of communication from senior management. The company is relocating operations to west coast. Employee morale is very low.

    Advice to Management

Be more forthcoming and honest with your employees. Listen to your employees - they drive the science and technology.

I worked at J Craig Venter Institute full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lots of different projects to work on, exposure to world class scientists and research, great work environment.

    Cons

Combination of tall corporate management structure and mixture of tenured academics with middle management seemed to result in bad decision making and management quarrels.

    Advice to Management

None. I had little to no exposure to senior management, and having a mixture of academic and corporate management structure is surely a nightmare to control. Picking one or the other is probably a good idea. The company is quite a different place now, I imagine--this feedback is from a few years ago.
