I have been working at J. Crew full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay - fun people - awesome discount!

    Cons

Bad hours - little flexibility - hard to move up.

    Advice to Management

Invest more into your employees who could really turn the investment into the customers and turn around the bad slump. We have potential, but until someone wants to recognize and cultivate that, we are wasted.

I have been working at J. Crew full-time

    Pros

The discount is nice, a lot of paid time off and good insurance and 401k program.

    Cons

Upper management is consistently hired externally. Managers and above have no knowledge of how the business runs, they just sit in offices and bark orders. Supervisors are moved every 6 months, so you have no time to flourish before you get put somewhere new. There is no room to grow and promotion is only possible if you become a robot. The company is doing terribly, yet supervisors are pushed to cut hours daily with a skeleton crew. Supervisors and managers come and go constantly, at least 10 have left in the last year. Pay is very low for this industry.

    Advice to Management

Let your supervisors do their jobs, they were promoted for a reason. Learn how the departments run instead of pushing impossible numbers. Promote internally and work on growth.

I worked at J. Crew full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Discount, benefits & PTO are great. Absolute best benefits of any company I've ever worked for actually. Corporate genuinely listens and takes customer suggestions into consideration. Customer service is typically top notch. Great stepping stone when J.crew was at its peak.

    Cons

It's all a huge popularity contest when it comes to advancement - hello high school. This is across the board both at 770, through flagship stores and down into the call centers. If you're someone's pet and look the part, you get the job. The quality of the clothing has taken a dive, and prices are rather inflated. although it is good to see the company going back to its roots in its core styling. A bit too late, I'm afraid as it seems they've lost their top tier client.

    Advice to Management

Mickey - you shoulda reeled Jenna back in a while ago. While her style is iconic, it's not classic J.Crew. You're her boss - manage your people, redirect the focus when needed. Buyers and merchants, stop copying styles from couture retailers and make the pieces you carry your own. Stick with the classics. If you bring back your tier 1, you may be able to revive the business to its full glory and splendor. Keep it classy, make it personal and she/he may consider coming back to their beloved brand. Managers - don't interview your 'pets'. Have a comparable manager interview for you if need be. There's far too much talent being passed up because hiring a friend is fun.

I worked at J. Crew full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible scheduling for students - 3 weeks of Paid time off, 1 week of paid sick days

    Cons

Ridiculously stressful during peak season, which is when they do most of their hiring. If you can make it through this period and make it on to a specialty team, its a breeze.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to discipline/fire people who don't actually work

I worked at J. Crew full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is a great job for a college student. The schedule is flexible to accommodate changing class schedules, and you can do your school work during down times. Benefits are great (arguably the best in Lynchburg, VA), employee discounts are awesome and you get a lot of PTO. This is an ideal position for someone who is simply looking for an income to pay bills. I was on the Email/Chat team where we could listen to music as we worked. Basically, J.Crew puts a lot of emphasis on customer service, so CSRs get a lot of perks.

    Cons

Lots of favoritism and job politics. It's hard to get ahead if a member of management simply does not like you. Also, it's required that you work one day of the weekend, Saturday or Sunday.

    Advice to Management

Make sure management is accountable, to get rid of favoritism.
