I have been working at J D Wetherspoon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Team members are generally friendly - Music is allowed in the kitchen (this wasn't the case in all the kitchens I have worked in previously) - Get a 20% discount on food and drink outside of working hours and a 50% discount on food during working hours

    Cons

    - The job gets repetitive after a while - Very little in the way of healthy eating on the menu - Bar staff errors can reflect badly on kitchen staff - Working shifts as opposed to set rota's leaves little time for routine or hobbies

    Advice to Management

    Improve communication

    I worked at J D Wetherspoon full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Thorough induction and free uniform.

    Cons

Management allowed senior management to bully members of staff and they were well known for it. Even when issues were raised senior management were never dealt with. Despite the thorough induction put on the same boring routine job every shift, on the odd occasion I got asked to do something else I was shouted at for not doing it properly despite not being shown and told I was a hindrance.

    Advice to Management

Instead of staff being forced to leave, get rid of your bully boy senior management.

    I worked at J D Wetherspoon full-time

    Pros

There is a real sense of teamwork in the kitchen. On a good day you might even feel alright about working here. Benefits are good and pay is good. Hygiene standards are pretty good. There is progression available but you're so much better now destroying your soul for an extra 20p. It was really easy to get an item repaired, if something broke then the time it took for it to get repaired after a call-out was quick. Staff...

    Cons

The work is just incredibly hard. You're probably one of those people, like me, who think "the harder the work is the better", but no. Each individual task isn't very difficult (i.e. cooking a meal, prepping an item, cleaning a fryer...) But if you divided the hours of your shift by the number of things you're expected to do within that shift then I think you'd be shocked by how little time you have per task. You're expected...

    Advice to Management

    - Improve training. - Evaluate every shift and what is expected of staff, do the maths, and when you see that the duties are impossible to complete correctly in the given time, increase the staff on the shift by one. - Acknowledge that people dine at Wetherspoons because of the price and then the quality of food, in that order. - Have the delivery arrive at, oh I don't know, a NON-BUSY HOUR. - Have SOPs and the menu...

    Pros

    Pub Bonus, easy, clean, tidy

    Cons

Most of the food is frozen and microwaved

    Advice to Management

Spend Money on doing the pub up so it is fit for purpose as currently kitchen is too small for the size of the pub.

    I worked at J D Wetherspoon part-time

    Pros

Learnt a lot in a short period.

    Cons

I never even got the opportunity to complete my 12 week trial. After being told I was doing fine and receiving no negative feedback, I suffered a stomach bug and had to call in sick due to the company’s policy regarding food health and Safety. I’d worked there for 7 weeks. The following shift, I was called to the manager and told I had failed my probation period because I was too slow, had a bad attitude and didn’t listen....

    Advice to Management

Realise what is actually going on in your restaurants. Your training talks about not bullying in the workplace, I have been humiliated, debased and can’t get a reference with a decent, fair employer. I gave up a job to better myself and have been left with no income with 4 children to feed.

I have been working at J D Wetherspoon part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Easy transfers, l worked in two pubs over 2 years, decent money, people are usually hilarious, lots of laughs, regulars were super friendly

    Cons

Moderately soul destroying, not where I saw myself in 5 years, customers can be a pain

    Advice to Management

All my managers have been lovely, even my current pub manager who I heard was really strict was actually the loveliest person ever

I have been working at J D Wetherspoon part-time for more than a year

    Pros

£7.90/hour (There's a minimum word count for this section)

    Cons

I have worked every weekend for the past 6 months, they won't rotate weekend shifts so some people never have to work any weekends. Recently they got rid of all the cleaners so that the pub would be cleaner (pure genius), basically means bar/floor staff have to clean instead making finishes last until 2-3am. They won't give you the rota until 2-3 days until the start of the week. Management forces you to change date...

    I have been working at J D Wetherspoon part-time

    Pros

The general atmosphere within the kitchen is great and there are times when the team really pull together to get through a tough patch. The managers on the whole are bearable and generally I have fun working here.

    Cons

It is non stop. You aren't allowed to have even thirty seconds just to gather your thoughts. I've been threatened with disciplinary action at 5 in the morning just because they saw me go outside for some fresh air. The rota is a joke, they either have no idea how shifts affect things like sleep schedules etc. or they just don't seem to care. I spend more time jumping through the hoops management create than actually doing...

    Advice to Management

Lay off on the rules a bit. I understand there are hygiene standards that must be met and overall standards that must be maintained but I feel as though management gets so caught up in statistics that they forget it's people they're dealing with. Also the acronyms suck.
