    Pros

Great wines, great new direction from corporate. One of the industry's best trade sections to help with selling product. Family owned and treats employees with respect.

    Cons

I worked at J. Lohr Winery for less than a year

    Pros

Got to learn a lot of good information and makes you learn the ropes very quickly.

    Cons

Hard and long work hours especially for an internship. Would recommend finding a viticulture or enology one. Not a ton of great benefits from working there and seemed very corporate and not a family vibe that I have received from other wineries.

I worked at J. Lohr Winery for less than a year

    Pros

Extremely friendly environment and very close interactions between different areas. As an intern, it is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience and learn from very experienced professionals.

    Cons

Intense and heavy workload during harvest and little opportunities to retain the interns after harvest.

I worked at J. Lohr Winery full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Employees in Paso Robles are absolutely wonderful. There is a strong focus on science.

    Cons

The owner/founder is a bully who berates his children in public management meetings. (Textbook chauvinist and bigot). He is unaware how, or uninterested in, treating others with basic respect. Employees are afraid of him. There are no women on the board. There is a massive divide between the way vineyard and winery employees are treated.

I worked at J. Lohr Winery for less than a year

    Pros

Had to do quite a bit around the vineyard. The works was enjoyable as you got to be outside most of the time.

    Cons

The work was quite monotonous and the work outside can be ridiculously hot. Sometimes it was hard to understand what we were doing.

I have been working at J. Lohr Winery

    Pros

This is a large company that is still family owned. That means that people who have been around for a long time get some loyalty from the company. Working in the wine industry comes with fantastic benefits for wine lovers that go above and beyond employee benefits. Most of the corporate-type jobs are out of San Jose and therefore you can work in the wine industry without having to relocate to wine country. The winery has been very commercially successful, and yet does not seem poised to sell out to one of the conglomerates any time soon, which is a nice position to work in for the wine industry.

    Cons

Different labor practices in wine country vs. the Bay Area has made it difficult for the company to implement policies that are palatable to employees throughout the company. Pay has not adjusted for cost of living in San Jose. The history of the company and the number of long term employees means a lot of employees are pretty ambivalent about wine generally which is demotivating to the employees who in it to work in the wine industry. Communication throughout the company has always been challenging. It's not always clear who can make decisions on certain things, and people sometimes get to weigh in on things it wouldn't seem should be in their ambit; that can make it difficult to get decisions made. Toes seem to be stepped on frequently.
