I worked at J. Paul Getty Trust full-time

    Pros

A truly international environment. The most valuable asset of the Institute is its staff who bring an exceptional array of perspectives, knowledge, and expertise.

    Cons

An extremely corporate environment with a rigid and stifling hierarchical structure. The organisation is extremely risk averse. The decisions it makes are too often influenced by a concern for branding and the advancement of institutional profile.

I worked at J. Paul Getty Trust as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Contracting at the Getty was an overall great experience. The views are great and it's inspiring being surrounded by brilliant individuals. Benefits are great and you will surely be well taken care of once you become part of the family. The family mentality and cohesiveness is unrivaled and the decision to accept a better offer from UCLA was hard to make. I will never forget this experience.

    Cons

-Great place to be as far as the prestige and looks of the Getty Center go.
-Condescending management paired with a dictatorship mentality made Getty life difficult to tolerate.
-Felt taken advantage of given the amount of hard work I put in only to be undervalued.
-Management had the habit of taking things personally.
    -Morale within department very low.

    Advice to Management

-Treat your department with respect and they will truly follow you into battle.
    -Don't take things personally
    -Teach what you preach.

I worked at J. Paul Getty Trust full-time

    Pros

Company has good benefits and is a great place to work if you are a student because they are willing to work with your school schedule. It also pays well for the position and is pretty easy.

    Cons

Little room for advancement. Supervisors are not very professional. It is a large company and it can be difficult to work with and get to know other departments even though they are all related. Moreover, it is run more like a for-profit than a non-profit such that communication and transparency are lacking.

    Pros

1.) Work-Life balance. Every other Friday off!
2.) Really comprehensive benefits. The on-site gym and transportation program are a plus.
3.) For the most part the people here are very friendly.
4.) Beautiful location and advanced access to exhibitions.

    Cons

1.) Not a great place to be if you're entry-level. Not a lot of people leave and if they do a lot of the time they hire someone from outside instead of inside.
2.) The only way to get a significant pay increase is if you move up, which is rare and difficult. We have performance reviews, but the increases don't really reflect reward for a exemplary work. It's more like a cost of living adjustment. Been here a while and my pay is still close to entry-level.
3.) There seems to be a bottleneck with upper management. Things take a long time to get approved even if it's something simple.

    Advice to Management

The employees here are very loyal. Most of them understand pay doesn't go up much, but the Getty should at least explain the math for how the endowment is budgeted. Teaching managers how to succession plan would be good too but doesn't seem likely.
