I have been working at J Sainsbury full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I have been working on a variety of projects, in different areas of the business, and with different data, both structured and unstructured.
The team is (was?) great, highly skilled and creative individuals who are fun to hang out with.

    Cons

The business is reluctant to change and work actively to against it. Recommendations based on data are often easily dismissed. If you have found a team that collaborates, there is usually another one coming in playing short sighted politics.
The senior management in the data team is unable to get on with a restructure that started over a year ago.
The tech stack is not fit for purpose (Windows 8, github blacklisted...) and the laptops are almost dying from the anti virus software that scans every read and write.
There is no career progression internally, even though positions are open in the team. Salaries are not reviewed.
Ideas for a new use of data or to solve a business problem are not appreciated, even if you can show they work with a POC prototype. There is a data innovation lab, but you are not able to work with them because 'there is no business value'.
A number of people have left, are under notice, or are planning to leave.

    Advice to Management

Stop talking and start doing. Learn to value the skills and personalities you have (had?) in your team. Get rid of windows 8, this is 2017.

I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Set shifts and decent pay makes it a great job to work along side uni, but there are also good opportunities for those who want to climb the ladder.

    Cons

    Overtime is not always guaranteed

    Advice to Management

Extend the overtime budget instead of over-hiring

I have been working at J Sainsbury part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work flexibility, a great place to in work retail if you have commitments outside of work. The application process is straightforward and arranging interview dates flexible.

    Cons

There is a lack of support for staff wanting to progress outside of retail. There are limited opportunities in retail and reduced resources available in convenience local stores.

I attended an interview and it seemed to go well, unfortunately when I asked for feedback it was very informal and seemed personal. The interviewer advised I was best suited for a future in retail despite applying for an office job at Holborn.

    Advice to Management

Encourage internal progress, even from the shop floor. There are graduates wasting away on the shop floor wanting more job satisfaction. Also more support is need for staff (excluding management) on the shop floor.

    Pros

Decent and equal pay, flexible (ish) hours, 12 hour minimum contract, overtime available, decent holiday, possible bonus, 10% discount- including argos and 20% at habitat, some benefits, toilets good place to cry

    Cons

3 sick days allowed per year, bonuses revoked if more than 3 sick days are taken in one year, little to no choice when booking holiday, risk of injury, no support should injury happen, only treated fairly if well liked by staff, customers can be brutal, sexism everywhere all the time, not a very good job.

    Advice to Management

Support employees, make it clear they are all equal, don't let them get hurt
