I have been working at J&L Marketing

    Pros

Proud to be part of the organization. Very knowledgebase about marketing. Surrounded by hard working people who want success for our clients. Good opportunity for career growth and development.

    Cons

No room for slackers here, they never make it. Not necessarily a Con, but for some people it may be.

    Advice to Management

I like the direction. Employees in management roles needs to be better trained to support all members of their teams.

I have been working at J&L Marketing full-time

    Pros

If you're a producer they leave you be

    Cons

There's a revolving door on management and they do not promote anyone on the sales team regardless of effort.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes. Stop hiring people that have no experience.

    I worked at J&L Marketing

    Pros

(Current to 1st Quarter 2016) They get that their dated, direct-mail marketing model is dated and are planning to make the leap to a digital marketing model.

    Cons

They may never get there. I'll be honest. I was only there for four months - and I was fired. Since leaving J&L I've joined a Fortune 50 company where I'm thriving, so I'm a pretty experienced, proven employee. Even given the tough economy of the 8 years, I don't know of any qualified prospect who would thrive in the dated management vs. employee culture at J&L. Steve Jobs once said, "Don't hire smart people and tell...

    Advice to Management

Scott Joseph, the CEO, is great, but no longer engaged on a daily basis. The marketing director has some good ideas, but none that I feel the president of the company understands, appreciates, or has the patience to develop.

I worked at J&L Marketing for less than a year

    Pros

Always made you feel part of a team even though you were working alone.

    Cons

A lot of travel and hotel stays.

    I worked at J&L Marketing full-time

    Pros

I’ll be honest; there are not many good things to say about J&L at its current state. There was a time when it was a good company to work for, but those days are long gone. I guess it’s good that the CEO throws fun parties. There are a handful of very good, dedicated people at the company and they are the ones who do the heavy lifting of work to keep the doors open. You will get to meet a lot of new people since turnover...

    Cons

Thanks to Glassdoor for providing this service of informing the public about companies. J&L is a great example where this is needed. My review is from my perspective as an employee. Upper management will not agree with this review because they are precisely the problem. First, it is true that the positive reviews on here are faked because upper management coerces employees to make them. Most of the 5 star reviews...

    Advice to Management

It doesn’t matter what anyone writes here because upper management won’t listen and lower management can’t speak up to change it or they risk being fired, but it’s worth a try. I would hire outside consultants to come in and interview current employees and keep their identities anonymous. Then, the consultants must report their findings to the CEO, not the president. If they report the problems to the president, nothing...

I have been working at J&L Marketing

    Pros

Tremendous opportunity on the sales side to make money. The training is good and comprehensive. The company does a lot of fun activities like parties, tickets to games, concerts, etc. The offices are really nice and has a bourbon cabinet for after work.

    Cons

There has been a lot of turnover because a number of young people fresh out of college were hired and were not ideal for sales. The bar has been raised though and now it is a wider variety with some young less experienced but smart and more experienced salespeople. The company expects people to work hard, but that is really a good thing!

    Advice to Management

Keep hiring high caliber talent and investing in training. The company is moving in the right direction.

I worked at J&L Marketing full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The best part of the company were the number of great employees that worked there. All are dedicated, talented and great to work with.

    Cons

The turnover rate in this company is unbelievable! Really scary! Management is terrible! CEO is ok, but is absent 50% of the time, so really doesn't have his fingers on the pulse of the company. President is a wolf in sheeps' clothing. Doesn't listen to anyone about anything and is unfair when it comes to policies, procedures, hiring and firing (mostly firing). I've seen so many people let go without any warning whatsoever....

    Advice to Management

Move president to another part of the company - back to sales, maybe? They need a president that is honest, fair, reasonable, and more involved with the entire company, rather than just "yes men". And it wouldn't hurt to have someone that cares about their employees.

I have been working at J&L Marketing part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Traveling is a lot of fun, the management is very friendly, the hotels are nice, and the experience is great!

    Cons

There are only a few events have been available to work lately and the food budget is only 10 dollars a day.

    Advice to Management

Increase food budget and possibly hire less PCs in order to give the current PCs some sustainable income.

I worked at J&L Marketing full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Only pro is that the backbone of the company (the production team) is made of some very nice, down-to-earth people.

    Cons

Everyone is overworked, they make promises they won't keep, many people were fired while I was there, they put the sales team on a pedestal and do not appreciate anyone else. Things move so quickly that mistakes happen left and right and there are no excuses to defend yourself. Management is the worst. Very egotistical, greedy men in the higher positions. The overall average here is definitely cushioned with a lot of...

    Advice to Management

Start recognizing how hard your production team works. Sales may bring in the money but if you don't have a strong production team, there is no product to sell.

I worked at J&L Marketing full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are great, hard working people that work in production. They appreciate the work that they do for one another and for the company. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. It really does feel like a big, extended family at times. Face to face, management is friendly and easy to talk to.

    Cons

Full disclosure: I am one of many people who have the company recently, though I left to pursue higher pay and advancement opportunities. About a year ago, the management adopted a business management book which has some good ideas about accountability and efficiency, but I don't believe they have fully implemented it. There is still a tendency to be a bit stingy in recognizing the best people and performers. The book...

    Advice to Management

You have good, talented people from top to bottom, but you need to recognize and acknowledge this in a concrete way. Just because you can and have run this company by yourself, it doesn't mean you should. Your best and brightest are leaving for greener pastures. Listen and acknowledge this talented individuals, or you risk more people leaving. The talent pool in Louisville is good, but you are quickly losing the ability...
