No cons for this job at all.

    Pros

Engaged community, very involved volunteers, clear mission and purpose

    Cons

Elements of micromanagement. Lack of resources, over worked, people stay in roles for years, little opportunity for internal growth and advancement

    Advice to Management

More support for staff, clearer communication about additional work expectations.

    Pros

Other staff is willing to help you. Great people working with children. Loving teachers.

    Cons

Administration doesn't have a clue what is going on and they don't want to hear complaints. Friendly with each other. Not good to staff

    Advice to Management

Take some time to listen to your staff. Stop the flood of good teachers leaving.

    Pros

They try to make it a friendly, welcoming environment where new counselors receive enough training for normal issues. Runs very smoothly, and they often find issues before they actually occur.

    Cons

I was there during a transition year, and there was obvious tension among the leadership. Some of their year-round teachers can be cliquey, although that's probably to be expected.

I worked at JCC of Northern Virginia full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The supervisors were very helpful and understanding. They support their teachers and listen to parents' concerns. The environment is friendly and clean. The school is well organized. Lots of fun activities to participate in for the school especially during the summer. Some flexible hours.

    Cons

Have to some times deal with the politics of the community center. Have to adhere to kosher rules (thought it best to mention though it isn't hard to follow, just don't bring meat for breakfast or lunch unless you know it is kosher, cheese is fine)

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

  6. "Compared to other JCCs in which I have worked, NOVA Early Childhood Department is disorganized, cliquey, & under-funded."

I have been working at JCC of Northern Virginia full-time

    Pros

    It's easy to get hired.

    Cons

Take advantage of employees. Not child focused, money focused. Will hire anyone (and many of the people they do hire are unfit to be around children).

    Advice to Management

Restructure and remodel the preschool. Visit the Weinstein JCC if you want an excellent model of what the NOVA JCC could be. Mostly, hire people who care about children, not recent high school grads who are just desperate for beer and cigarette money. If that means enrollment of children has to go down, so be it.
