I worked at JD Williams full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Pleasant, good colleagues, interesting technology

    Cons

Retail politics, change of management, hideous building, poor implementation of Agile development. Bonus led obsession with short term release deadlines leads project managers to deliver lots of bolt ons rather than looking ahead and making the solution scalable to future needs

    Advice to Management

Favour technical expertise and foresight over box ticking, red tape and short term release objectives

    Negative Outlook

I worked at JD Williams full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good people to work with, creates good atmosphere. Has potential to be great again. Good central Manchester location. Good social life (non work organised)

    Cons

General feeling of doom and gloom over the company. Current CEO and CIO presiding over, and the architects of the downfall of once great company. Too much being outsourced to 3rd parties, with little or no interest in the long term interests of the business.

    Advice to Management

Stop 'jobs for the boys' from previous roles, hire independent individuals that are not afraid to tell the truth. Listen to them. Invest in your staff, make them grow, and they will remain loyal.

    I worked at JD Williams

    Pros

Growing company with lots of room for personal growth and input into changes within the retail business. Opportunity for relocation to further progression

    Cons

No definitive training structure in place to ensure continued growth in company. Limited opportunities to progress unless you're willing to relocate around the country

I have been working at JD Williams full-time

      Pros

Management can be quite good, huge company so some benefits come from that. Decent pension scheme. Relaxed worked enviroment

      Cons

Pay can sometimes be below average. Company recently went through a lot of redundancies but seems to be fine now.

    • "Great place to work! Fabulous people great central location."

      StarStarStarStarStar
        Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at JD Williams

        Pros

Fast paced, technology driven business with an ambition to be digital first retailer, but not digital only. Huge technology transformation and investment in place to ensure business is able to compete in the digital space, lots of change and an excellent team.

        Cons

Lots of change creates some internal frustration and land grabbing whilst people learn what new technology will deliver in capability.

        Advice to Management

Need to ensure you all live and breathe the company values, they could help differentiate and make a difference in the wider market

      • "Long term success story"

        StarStarStarStarStar
          Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at JD Williams full-time for more than 10 years

          Pros

Long term success story. Company made things happen. Very nice people worked there. Good package spread across all workforce. Good results

          Cons

As company became successful, politics grew as many people saw themselves as author of that success. Customer value proposition declined.

          Advice to Management

Much of success is down to a small number of individuals. Identify and look after these stars. Ensure value is retained for customers, since if trust is lost, then business will suffer.

I worked at JD Williams full-time for more than 8 years

          Pros

I can't think of anything good about working at JD Williams apart from central city centre location with good transport links

          Cons

Absolutely awful atmosphere. Complete mistreatment of staff by senior management Treated like a piece of dirt if you are not one of the gang Whilst the benefits are good on paper management find every way they can to wrangle their way out of honouring them The place is haemorrhaging money on a Business Transformation project which will fail due to the incompetence of the IT directors 'mates' who have been brought in...
