  1. "Good work, but poor execution."

I worked at JK Harris & Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Middle management was easy to get along with, spoke to their employees like adults, and had fairly realistic expectations. A feeling of great satisfaction was to be felt upon completing past-due tax returns for a client. After one spends so much time on one person's case, the sense of accomplishment felt at its conclusion is quite rewarding.

    Cons

Upper management, though fairly accessible, had unrealistic expectations with regards to the speed:accuracy ratio of return completion. Accuracy tended to take a back seat to speed with some preparers, which was not specifically endorsed by management, but was in a de facto manner, as those who completed returns quickly were offered bonus incentives. However, the returns were often quite complicated and required more time to complete accurately, leading to poor preparation accuracy being rewarded. Sales force often made promises about the work of the Tax Preparation and Case Resolution departments which could not be kept once the case was under way and the full scope of the client's issues was realized.

    Advice to Management

Though the company has since been liquidated due to multiple lawsuits leading to insolvency, many can learn from its mismanagement. While after working for this firm, In my opinion, there were two major issues that led to the downfall of the company. First, many members of the sales team often promised unrealistic terms of resolution in an effort to sell contracts, leading to an impasse at case resolution. Second, speed was encouraged more than accuracy. It is important to note, that despite the claims of many plaintiffs, from my perspective it was never the policy of the company to encourage these practices, but nor was its policy discouraging said misdoings. Others in the industry should take note of these mistakes and attempt to prevent similar occurrences in their own businesses.

    Pros

The VP of Sales was an honorable man that tried to change the culture from selling the most profitable services regardless of whether or not it was appropriate to a needs based sale.

    Cons

The company was being sued constantly for selling inappropriate services to customers. Many good people were taking care of customers in a professional manner, but were painted with fraud brush.

    Advice to Management

The owners of this firm should never work in a consumer sale environment. They took advantage of customers and good employees.

    Pros

My co-workers! And the fact that everyday I assist hardworking and stressed out people solve their state and federal tax problems. It is tremendously rewarding. Also, I believe that the company culture is one that is very caring, at least relative to other workplaces. Personal and professional growth is encouraged.

    Cons

Upper management has been very out of touch in recent years. Changes have been made to the company that NEVER should have been allowed to be implemented. Morale has been quite low. HOWEVER, Great strides have been made very recently. Things are looking up significantly.

The commute is pretty brutal for many employees.... and the ability to work flex time and/or from home is non-existent for most of us.

    Advice to Management

Follow through with the changes that are beginning to take place and PLEASE get rid of the multiple layers of management by re-allocating these poor people so that their talent and skills are not wasted. Send ltr's along with the consultants from time to time to meet with clients. Its the fastest and most efficient way for the consultants to learn how to sell the right product to the right customer and it will give the consultants more confidence.

    Pros

The premise behind a tax resolution firm is solid.
The desire to help those who have gotten into a difficult financial situation is admirable

    Cons

Management is more concerned in the sales aspects then in the best resolution for a client. The focus is on doing enough work to show that a contract has been satisfied. No consideration is given to what is the best overall course of action for a client. Management also micromanages those who do not need day to day attention. Focus is on numbers and spreadsheets and no time is taken to determine what actual work is being done. A bonus structure is in place that is virtually impossible to reach. On the rare occasion that a goal is reached management places an even more unrealistic goal in place. Management does not think more than one step ahead, more attention needs to be placed on the big picture.

    Advice to Management

Look at the people who are working and not just the numbers on a spreadsheet. Customer service is based on more than just a fuzzy feeling through the process. The quality of the result is as important as obtaining a result

    Cons
