I worked at JW Player for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Fun atmosphere - Product is solid and developers/engineers/revenue folks all view it with high regard - Unlimited vacation - Work hard and you will close deals. Comp is good on deals won

    Cons

    - Lots of turnover in the sales org. Morale low - Comp plans changed almost yearly

    Advice to Management

Focus more on consistent training - when you start, and ongoing. Create a mentorship program.

I have been working at JW Player full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Friendly people. Almost everyone is friendly and collaborative. Lots of fun events like knitting classes and karaoke. - Interesting technology problems. The company has a lot of large scale problems with video and data. Being a relatively small company, it's possible to own a large interesting project quickly. - Great work / life balance. The atmosphere is generally lax with no "face time" expectations. - Amazing...

I have been working at JW Player full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Smart people who care about the company and want to succeed. -Spacious office. -Amazing health insurance.

    Cons

-Undergoing lots of change with minimal effort at change management. - Extremely low morale and pretty high rate of burnout. -Toxic culture. More blame oriented than solutions oriented. -Hemorrhaging talent and not backfilling effectively. -Very little diversity. Really bad gender ratio and nearly nonexistent minority representation. Especially in sales.

    Advice to Management

Don’t make company culture and team morale an afterthought. Prioritize your employees experience if you want to keep good people. Don’t blame rank and file employees for things that leaders should hold themselves accountable to. Agree on a strategy and share it with the company and explain how it will make things better.

I worked at JW Player full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - You get to work with some of the more cutting edge technologies in the industry - Pay is competitive

    Cons

    - You'll most definitely be micromanaged to no end - Your input on decision-making is only heard based on your seniority rather than on whether you can back up your ideas with data or reasoning - Teams can be rather selfish. You'll be ignored in your team chat from time to time because many people only care about themselves - Obsession with inane processes that don't make a lot of sense and waste everyone's time -...

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better and find competent leaders who know how to lead rather than those who are good at laying out a bunch of red tape and overly bureaucratic

I have been working at JW Player full-time

    Pros

Customers love the journey, from sales, pre-sales, support and post sale white glove treatment and focus on making customers more video related revenue

    Cons

Very New York centric. Still small company with 250 employees but slowly accepting of a global remote work force.

I have been working at JW Player full-time for more than a year

      Pros

One of the fastest growing tech companies in NYC Industry is booming, no signs of slowing down. Bright future ahead for the company Supportive & motivating work environment Great people, coworkers have become quick friends Inspiring and challenging work If you work hard and are dedicated you will get rewarded Fully paid benefits, open pto policy

      Cons

Lots of change - as any fast growing company. If you're good with adapting to change you'll be fine.

      Advice to Management

Very open and flat organization, CEO and execs are some of the nicest people I've ever worked with. Will not only chat with you but actually listen. Definitely need more women in the work place, male dominated now but they're working on improving with a new Women in Tech initiative.

I have been working at JW Player full-time

      Pros

-Great benefits: Unlimited PTO, benefits 100% covered , free snacks, stock options, work/life balance, etc. -Good Product -Smart people, growing rapidly, though there seems to be a lot of people leaving recently -Nice office space -Decent pay

      Cons

-No 401k match -Typical start-up growing pains (scaled too fast without proper infrastructure in place) -Lack of communication/upper management is disorganzied -A few negative employees in the org that disrupt everyone else, but nothing is addressed -Budgets are being cut and we can all feel the impact

      Advice to Management

Follow your own guidelines and be transparent/candid with the company. There seems to be a break in communication from the top down and a lack of communication with middle management. Strive to be more proactive and not reactive to issues that come up by being more thoughtful about changes across the organization.

I have been working at JW Player full-time

      Pros

      * A cool product in a growing industry, with some great customers * Lots of career growth opportunities - many get promoted annually * Stable and steady growth - for a pseudo-startup it is very grounded in fiscal reality * Smart people, positive culture * Opportunity to work as much or as little as you want. Those that go above and beyond are fairly well compensated for it. * Challenging technical problems at relatively...

      * A few "bad-apples" who have stayed on the tree for too long * Top-down decisions around systems architecture

      Advice to Management

Be decisive and cut losses earlier. Be wary of people whose focus is on "hitting their quarterly goals." Finishing your OKRs is very different from having done something worthwhile.
