I have been working at Jackson Laboratory full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

JAX is a non for-profit organization and at times this can be fun, although management are not shy to use this to keep the run of the mill people's salary capped.
The work you will doing will assist cutting edge science.
    Benefits are ok to good

    Cons

For a non-profit, the leading managers have very high salaries and or bonuses, which have the feel of taking advantage of the lower levels of workers.
They tend to pull we are "all one organization", working for a good cause to keep wages and complaints down while having a separate elite class.
The organization is obsessively secretive, again except for the small elite class.

    Advice to Management

For senior management - look up the word "hypocrite"
that way you will know what we all see in to you

I worked at Jackson Laboratory full-time

    Pros

As an In Vivo Technologist, I gained a huge amount of work experience with a variety of biomethods and research projects within a relatively short period of time. I also heard that employees at the main branch in Maine are treated very well.

    Cons

Very high turnover rate while I worked in the Sacramento branch. This was probably due to being perpetually understaffed, overworked, and underpaid. Many employees would get the job experience at this company, then move to another company ASAP.

    Advice to Management

I'm not sure if the situation has improved in the last 3 years, but Sacramento management should take steps to reduce turnover rate- perhaps by offering better pay, or hiring more employees so the existing ones won't be stretched so thin.

I worked at Jackson Laboratory full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place to gain lab animal experience if this is your first animal care job.
Educational classes to help educate employees on the animals

    Cons

Quotas are too high for technicians to be able to spend the time and attention required to ensure adequate colony management and animal welfare

    Advice to Management

Listen to what your employees are telling you. They are the front line or your company and their input is essential to keeping the production flow you expect

I have been working at Jackson Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Very family & community oriented. JAX allows one the ability to climb the ladder if dedicated and the right opportunity presents itself. Great fitness centers and programs that encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

    Cons

JAX has non-profit status, so the process of obtaining money for anything (salaries, promotions, equipment, travel, software, etc.) is difficult, intensive, and often unsuccessful. Every penny is scrutinized. Key management sometimes makes knee-jerk operational decisions that have a huge impact, but don't always make a lot of logical & scientific sense, and this can be very costly to the institution. Further, many mid-level managers are not empowered to make decisions on their own without having to consult with numerous layers of senior management- everyone is afraid to make a wrong decision and look bad in front of the Chief Operating Officer (naysayers are NOT hired). This causes progress & process improvements to be very, very, frustratingly slow. The IT department cannot get out of their own way- there are so many reorganizations, project reassignments, and revolving managers that the people who actually develop applications to handle the amazing scientific discovery data JAX produces can't focus on one project for more than a week before they are shuffled onto the next project. So nothing actually ever gets completed or improved, and in the process, tons of dollars are wasted. There have been a lot of recent changes, with the tendency to hire more and more high-level managers with big titles (many of whom are often inaccessible), and the little guys who are in the trenches are "doing more with less"- underpaid and overworked. When the little guys make a mistake because they are stressed out beyond belief and struggling to make ends meet, the tendency is towards punitive action. This results in an extremely demoralized staff.

    Advice to Management

Empower people to make decisions, and stop squashing discordant opinions- often this is the way new ideas come about. Focus on addressing the persistent problems with IT data management, sharing, and analysis, or JAX won’t be able to compete effectively in the industry. Support the little guys with more staff- don’t work them into the ground and don’t beat on them if they make a mistake! They make sure that mice are sold to pay the bills and assure operations continue.
