I worked at Jackson Memorial Hospital (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent training facility.. I found the nursing staff respectful to co-workers and patients. No culture of unease among the nursing staff. Most were long-term hires and stated they were satisfied with current pay-rate and quality of life.

    Cons

At the time of my experience, there was a high nurse-patient ratio. Not good for the RN; excellent for the interning students. Patient complaints were mostly delayed call time response and medication administration.

    Advice to Management

As was the case in most community hospitals in 2012, total patient care coordination was lacking or not structured. A structured intake; care and discharge planning patient care team is desirable for high RN to patient ratios.

I have been working at Jackson Memorial Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There is a union that is good about advocating for the employees. It is a great place to see cases/diseases that are rarely seen at other hospitals making it a good place to learn. The large number of low-income, homeless/indigent patients makes me feel like I am doing something worthwhile for people that really have nowhere else to go.

    Cons

The higher people are in the hierarchy of the organization the greater their hypocrisy. For good reason there is a long history of distrust of management and executives... i.e. employees went four years without pay-raises and were made to "contribute" about 5% from our pay in order to help the hospital build up its financial reserves. However, management and administration did not have to "contribute" anything from their pay, and they still continued to receive their bonuses.

    Advice to Management

Implement a 360 degree employee evaluation process...
