I have been working at Jackson State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Higher Learning Institution to work for

    Cons

Based performances off whether you are liked, not by the skills

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Jackson State University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

For a small university, it has some excellent quality researchers in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Some of the graduate teaching assistants in this department are awesome!

    Cons

The faculty and staff can be not so nice at times. The campus needs a better variety of food. John A. Peoples Building needs a major renovation. Get some EFI sockets in here, please!

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge that you are working in an institution that can have the deepest impact on an individual's life. Dr. Paige is doing a great job of righting the ship, but he won't be here forever!

I worked at Jackson State University (More than a year)

    Pros

JSU provided great benefits in terms of health insurance, great retirement plan, etc.

    Cons

Nepotism and patronage at its finest. Advancement was never granted based on merit, but who you knew, who you were related to, or in other unethical circumstances (ex: the girls willing to sleep with married men to get a raise). Your skills never mattered. I worked in a department where the mistresses were rewarded with ridiculous, undeserved raises (10-12 thousand dollars at a time), while the descent employees did all the work and struggled to pay their bills. Very sexist and cut-throat environment. Did I mention women are treated like a piece of meat? No respect and low pay. I was also a student, and nepotism and politics also played a role in a student’s success. Hard work never pays off at JSU.

    Advice to Management

Work at abolishing unethical and immoral behavior. Treat people with humility. Treat employees equally, and reward those who work hard-Not those willing to sleep with you, not your lazy relatives, and not your political affiliate’s friends/relatives.
