    I worked at Jagex full-time

    Pros

Nice people in the actual teams - good social life if you are able to make friends but a few sexist idiots spoil it somewhat.

    Cons

Terrible HR and senior management. Reliance on one product. Inability to spot when presumed replacement products were dead in the water.

    Advice to Management

Fail fast, fail often rather than develope for 5 years, change tack twice and then finally fail

    Pros

Fun Place to work, Free fruit, benefits. Full Canteen, good equipment. Friendly place to live.

    Cons

Badly run, People are brought in due to nepotism on ridiculously high salaries and do not deliver. Money goes to Runescape as they are the breadwinner and the other products suffer. Redundancies are not far away when starting at this company.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the new products. Get a small really good team and create some new ideas.

I have been working at Jagex full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Personally speaking the best team of people I've ever worked with.
Great core product, created and maintained by enthusiastic people the majority of which are talented professionals.
New product teams of talented devs and artists full of ideas which, as a gamer look really exciting.
TPP (Thursday personal projects). A great initiative letting people develop ideas alone or in groups. Some excellent VR prototypes and improvements to existing titles and tools have come from this.
Decent benefits including an excellent canteen, however as other reviewers have noted they have been refocused of late by a out of touch exec tier who don't seem to appreciate that their entire business is built on the work of artists and engineers rather than management.

    Cons

Depending what department and field you are in salaries range from good to borderline unlivable.
Due to measures taken pending sale (but shhh it's a secret), staffing levels have dropped. Gaps are starting to show and it's hard on the people in those under staffed teams right now.
Work life balance. It fluctuates greatly based on your role and team. No one can deny Cambridge is now as expensive to live in as London but without the public transport system to support efficient commuting.
Staying positive day to day can be hard. Line managers help a lot but when the rudder is flung from side to side on a daily basis it's often impossible to look back and feel a sense of achievement if the thing you just built is no longer required.

    Advice to Management

In the trenches keep doing what you are doing. You keep the ship running and the good weeks are all due to you guys.
On the larger company scale. The delusion is clearly too strong in those who should be immersing themselves in the medium we make, and the communities where our customer are rather than the frankly comical, buzzword laden corporate management meta material they regurgitate. The rest can embrace the future. We have an opportunity for real change at the top. I'm sure there are eager professionals out there who can actually provide business and technical leadership to our teams of capable and hopefully still enthusiastic engineers and artists. Statistics can guide games engineers and designers toward creating great games, you can't make a game based on studies and statistics.

I worked at Jagex full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Plenty of staff perks including health and dental, decent staff parties, nice location in the country.

    Cons

Low salary, lack of real promotion for those who actually develop the games. Too much old blood that has too strong a hold on what gets developed and how. No real understanding of gamers outside of the core RS players in upper management.

    Advice to Management

Stop believing that everything you do will be gold dust and really start paying attention to what's working in the games industry and when you're behind the curve. Start trusting your creatives more, and be more open about the company's position overall.

I have been working at Jagex full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Benefits are alright
-The majority of the staff are nice people and you will make friends easily enough
    - Most staff members genuinely care about their job and the goals of the company
    - The new exec team are trying to increase communication and transparency
    - There are plenty of opportunities for advancement and new positions are often advertised internally before being advertised externally.
    - It's a great stepping stone for your career and you'll gain valuable experience.

    Cons

-The same mistakes are made over and over again. Instead of trying to learn from the past everything is blamed on ex-employees.
-There are some really untalented and unpleasant exec members who only remain because of personal friendships with investors.
-Even if you're hired specifically to advise, as an expert in your subject, your advice will often be ignored by product managers who think they know better, if they even bother asking for your advice at all. But they'll come to you quick enough when things start to go sour.
-Some departments have very high turnover and department leaders continuously hire staff who under perform and are generally incapable of doing their job. Instead of changing the recruitment process or noticing the pattern of some people constantly hiring under performers, the same managers hire the next batch of under performers.
-While Mark had his faults, he had integrity, which the new management team lack entirely.

    Advice to Management

Don't outright lie to your staff. They will find out and lose all respect, trust and loyalty to you.

Instead of just giving your staff beer once a month, and occasionally letting them spend an afternoon playing games, make real, meaningful changes to improve staff happiness and help staff maintain a good work/life balance. People who miss out of spending time with their families to work overtime for you don't want to be paid in pizza.

I worked at Jagex full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Some fun people to be around.
    - A good way to get into the games industry if you don't know much.
    - Jolly budget and other benefits are good.
    - A good way of getting money without having to put any effort in.
    - Nice location to live in England.
    - Get e-peen online with all the RuneScape gals because you're a Jmod.

    Cons

    - Complete failures at publishing new games, let alone developing them.
    - People in powerful positions have climbed up from the bottom without acquiring relevant knowledge.
    - Generally a low talent density.
    - RuneScape is run by people that have no idea what's best for it, and most couldn't care less either.
    - No real transferable skills can be acquired.
    - Too many tiers of management so nothing ever gets done.
    - Sadly, one of the best ways to get a pay rise is to tell them that you're leaving.
    - Sausage fest.

    Advice to Management

Quit. Hopefully the board will employ someone better.

    Pros

    . the staff
    . work environment
    . company perks & benefits
    . location
    . great jollies!
    . overtime compensation
    . canteen
    . free fruit (obviously)

    Cons

. limited knowledge of development cycles. New projects gets stressed out and legacy issues never gets addressed
. sometimes having to perform tasks in a way that might contradict your basic principles as a talented professional
. easy to get comfortable and stop caring about future opportunities
. sometimes promoting incorrect people that doesn't suit the role (leads should possess strong leadership skills)

    Advice to Management

. management is hopefully on the upswing. I won't comment the management during my time at Jagex since most of the operating senior management have all left and my advice would be irrelevant

    Pros

Made some lifelong friends during my work experience. Excellent talented people are working at the company.

    Cons

Ever-shifting deadlines are like walking on quicksand. Lots of focus on last minute changes, and exceptionally poor management. They never listen to the developers, the people who do all the hard work.

    Advice to Management

Better compensate for my living costs, great benefits and especially the on-site canteen and fruit, but I still need to pay rent everyday. Listen to the concerns of your employees. If only the management was reasonable.
