I have been working at James Hardie full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay. Smart people. Great product.

    Cons

The segment leaders don't run a business or P&L, they run projects that can't be measured. The growth targets are fine (PDG) but only in units, not sales or profitability. Lack of a prioritization process, so they just add on and add on without taking anything away or closing things out. It's a manufacturing/operations/supply chain company so if you're in Marketing, Finance, Channel, etc. stay away. Just look at the past 6 months-year performance vs. peers like LP.

    Advice to Management

Have a great product, run in like you report it to the street- in metrics, financials, and with prioritization/focus.

I worked at James Hardie (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, pay ok, pay for boots

    Cons

Management turnover rate high, company says they care about employees , but realty they only care about their product, only time they see employees when they make a mistake, never awarded for a job well done, safety is high on list but only for insurance reasons

    Advice to Management

Management you never see always in meetings , never there to advise or direct

I have been working at James Hardie full-time

    Pros

The money is good, with the lack of intellect and talent it is very easy to shine if you have either of those qualities, the shift work for me is convenient and overtime is regularly available. Most of the workers are good blokes. Free lunch every second Friday and $3.50 every other. The workplace is fairly safe. There is regular training for confined space, first aid etc...

    Cons

Working public holidays when you're rostered on, sabotage between shifts, the change of production management is a frequent thing, rather then earn respect management demand it, so many casual employees with a clear lack of talent are somehow still working there yet those with actual talent are left as casual employees who eventually leave for better work. Christmas gifts given to management from suppliers should be distributed to all employees rather then just the management team. Production Performance results are posted for individual teams which in turn creates a raft between teams, teams are publicly shamed via results, is this not a form of bullying from the business? That comes back to poor management which has only recently been appointed.

    Advice to Management

Start looking after the people that actually run the machines rather then the management team, morale is at an all time low, individual teams are rewarded while others are setting those teams up for success yet left with nothing, when was the last time the teams were given a bbq lunch or breakfast as a thank you or just a sign of good faith, no Christmas gift yet the business profits over 200 million for the fiscal yr. Profits grow and rewards are taken away, i remember the days of the $100 gift cards, now they're down to $50 if you're lucky to be in that team that sucks the boss.
