I have been working at Janssen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

It is a great place to work where your work feels valued. Management treats employees (mostly) with respect and humility. The pay is good and the benefits are industry-leading

    Cons

Just like the downsides of all businesses, when you are no longer needed, they have no problem getting rid of you. SOmetimes poor business planning can purge institutional knowledge for jut long enough that we realize it was a mistake, necessitating new hires, and new learning curves.

    Advice to Management

Identify key positions where value is certainly contributed and try to retain that talent. When the net is positive for a certain position, don't remove that position simply because you think it has provided it full value; back that up with data and knowledge

I have been working at Janssen full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Really great benefits, competitive salary, a lot of employee perks and discounts, investment in employee education, ability to make a positive impact in the world, senior management has s strong vision for the future.

    Cons

Work/life balance is touted but not realistic or achievable for many due to workload, unreasonable deadlines, and lack of flexibility in a work from home policy. Work from home policies are extremely outdated and for no good reason other than mid-level management wants you there even if you're on conference calls for hours consistently. With many moving to Titusville now that Raritan is closing, work/life balance will suffer more due to a much longer commute. There are a lot of old school practices that can bring projects to a halt due to politics, lack of vision, an overload of meetings and time consuming side projects that are generally not impactful. There is an unwritten rule you will take on additional projects or risk not being a true team player/top performer. Goals and expectations are often unclear, and drastic shifts in direction are common. This applies to both projects and work goals. Mid-level management often is in the way more than helpful, changing course for no other reason than lack of knowledge or a vision counter to reality. It's a highly political environment that often leads to people being more worried about looking good and being seen as right, which often gets in the way of progress. Generally speaking, mid-level management runs counter to the more progressive, effective vision of senior management. Sadly, senior management's vision is not fully realized due to this lack of mid-level management vision.

    Advice to Management

You'll need to handhold or force mid-level management to be more progressive in their management style. Leading by example but allowing them to continue to manage as they do isn't going to work and sends mixed messages to employees.
