  • Great people to work with in certain pockets of the firm (in 13 reviews)

  • Dynamic, aggressive company with an appetite to become a far bigger player in the investment banking world than they currently are (in 12 reviews)

Cons
  • work/life balance varies from tolerable to non-existent (in 17 reviews)

  • Hours can be really brutal, it is a sweatshop to a degree but then again it is investment banking (long hours are to be expected) (in 19 reviews)

    I worked at Jefferies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - health centre/gym in the basement is convenient
    - work could be interesting and varied at times

    Cons

    - remuneration is nothing special
    - culture and environment is very opaque and political
    - favouritism and unequal treatment within teams
    - work/life balance varies from tolerable to non-existent
    - recruitment process contrived and unnecessarily onerous

    Advice to Management

    don't hire people for a job that just isn't there to be created. don't hire out of optimism either.

    I worked at Jefferies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    None. Before deciding to leave, I asked myself repeatedly, what will I miss about Jefferies? Each time the answer was, nothing.

    Cons

    Jefferies was a good place to work for. I enjoyed going to work. I felt like I made a difference. I felt valued. All that changed when IT was outsourced. Overnight, management's attitude changed. We were no longer an asset but just a resource. Management only looks out for management. It's a very selfish environment. Zero room for growth.

    Advice to Management

    Value your employees because Jefferies is NOT the "best place to work". Stop bombarding us to vote!

    Pros

    Smart and talented staff, although the more recent hires are a cut below

    Cons

    Even for Wall Street mgmt seems to have little regard for it's top performers
    Flavor of the day politics are more important than profitability
    Very short term focus
    If you are one of Rich and Brian's guys then you can do anything, if not then it depends on day to day how you stand
    Super aggressive retention stock policy

    Advice to Management

    Let the people running their departments do their job and stop the Monday morning quarterbacking. If a group is making money or losing money it is not always a reflection of their talent or dedication. There is a huge tendency for management to look at the short term results in our business groups and not look at the landscape of how the business will change going forward.
    Also cut the sanctimonious PR stuff about "partner employees" - it does more harm than good.

    I worked at Jefferies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Small, very entrepreneurial, with ambitious mindset. Still a dominant force in trading and certain IB industries, but trying to punch above its weight elsewhere is counterproductive.

    Cons

    Brutal culture. Juniors get crushed and simply use it as a stepping stone elsewhere. High MD turnover. Constantly over promise and under deliver.

    Advice to Management

    Walk the talk & share the wealth.

    Pros

    Probably get more modeling experience than you would at other banks. Nothing else I can think of at this time.

    Cons

    Cold environment - people don't say hello or even acknowledge each others' presence. Disorganized managers create unnecessary work and constant fire drills. Senior bankers act like independent contractors - no sense of team cohesiveness and in many cases they don't even know the juniors' names

    Advice to Management

    End of year reviews consist of 40+ people sitting together in a room and verbally rating each superior. How is this an effective way to solicit meaningful and accurate feedback?

    Pros

    Location is convenient, relaxed and friendly environment, remote working a plus.

    Cons

    Outdated end-user technology, if you are lucky enough to be given laptop it will be at least 3-4 years old and a brick. Corporate applications do not perform the functions required, managers are out of touch with the minimum industry standards to achieve work quality. They bleed their vendors and have no spend strategy.

    Advice to Management

    Refresh everything... and join everyone else in 2016.

    I worked at Jefferies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Lots of live deals as Jefferies never turns down an assignment. So good experience but you get used to having your share of broken deals / time sinks

    Cons

    Terrible hours. Pitch for everything. Unreasonable senior banker expectations. Healthcare banking gets treated better than rest. Poor politics. Watch your back!
