I have been working at Jefferson Parish Public School System full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay is consistent. Great holidays. Summers off. Some new schools with high standards. Great vacation days and sick leave is provided.

    Cons

There is a great deal of politics in placements of administration and at central office positions where favored and those connected politically get the Cush jobs.

    Advice to Management

Look at all qualified candidates. Not just those that speak up

I worked at Jefferson Parish Public School System full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Many enthusiastic teachers that wanted to make a difference. Unfortunately, there was not much else positive about the teaching environment there.

    Cons

Complete lack of discipline at particular school. Little support from administration. Discipline department either understaffed or complacent.

    Pros

Job security, able to transfer easily, largest district in Louisiana so many opportunities are possible, many professional development opportunities, time off.

    Cons

Frozen wages for several years. We are given one time payments in certain cases but unfortunately this is not the same as a yearly increase. I think people transfer to other parishes due to this situation.

I have been working at Jefferson Parish Public School System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent teachers. District is part of New Orleans metroplex with access to wonderful culture, food, hospitality.

    Cons

Louisiana school districts are under extreme budget constraints. Salaries are extremely low and employees have not had a raise in many years. Limited technology/access to tech support.

    Advice to Management

Salaries must be raised to national averages; improve access to techology in the classroom and tech support.

I have been working at Jefferson Parish Public School System full-time

    Pros

It is the largest district in the state. Schools generally have funding when needed. I need to type six more words.

    Cons

The Central Office, at least this year, has put way too much work on its teachers. This parish is contributing to the statistic of new teachers quitting before 5 years. I work an average of 60 hours a week with no overtime compensation.

    Advice to Management

Create the resources for your new teachers and give them out BEFORE you (the state) decide to change everything about the end of the year testing. Central Office, next time the state decides to switch up something significant, maybe wait a year or two to start making your teachers spend hours analyzing data and filling out paperwork. We're spending too much time on that instead of on our lesson plans, which negatively affects student learning.
