I worked at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are usually pretty decent people, they pay you, it's a job, usually in a decent location, they have lots of craft stuff

    Cons

Blackout days off starting at thanksgiving and carries over until mid January even though it is not in the employee handbook, had many problems getting time off if the schedule was already done not just because I wanted a day off but because I had to have medical tests that were scheduled for me by the doctor which were out of my control, favoritism by store managers for certain team members if you weren't a favorite you were berated for mistakes and humiliated in front of other team members and sometimes in front of customers, high turnover rate, also you get scheduled for an 8 hour shift doing the same thing it would be nice to have half a shift doing cashier and half a shift at the cutting counter or stocking, don't expect the store manager or corporate to back you up trying to follow the corporate policies and when you don't expect that you WILL be reprimanded and reminded of the policies even though apparently they are more like the pirate code

    Advice to Management

No one wants to work for barely minimum wage and be humiliated and berated everyday, back up your employees that are following your corporate policies and stop making them look incompetent, call me I could give you a laundry list

    Pros

As soon as you are hired they give you all the information that you need if you get past the probation period.

    Cons

The managers of the store that I worked for wanted more hours so they stopped scheduling people and refused to answer why.

    Advice to Management

Don't make promises that you won't keep.

I worked at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It was great working with a crew WILLING AND ABLE to get the job done (as long as upper management didn't have an agenda to made them look bad)

    Cons

Too much power given to management, as far as being able to create drama and failures that can be blamed on persons they want out of "their" store. Some of the managers bring too much baggage with them. They should not be allowed to screw around with the livelihood of others

    Advice to Management

Follow the M.O. of the manager finding fault with people in their employ. Usually the person is a loyal, good worker, has no problems getting the job done. Interview random co-workers about what is happening.

I worked at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores (More than a year)

    Pros

There aren't really a whole lot of pros other than it's an okay minimum jo if you're not wanting to work fastfood.

    Cons

Constantly changing rules, low pay, half the workers called off all the time, there'd only be one cashier working and one person at the cutting counter so we'd have 5+ people in line and only one person working. There were times when the one person working would be scheduled to leave, but the next person wasn't scheduled to come in for half an hour, so you were forced to stay. Hours were minimal. During the summer after a two week paycheck I'd have to withdraw money from savings just to pay my $63 phone bill.

    Advice to Management

Give your good workers hours and fire the people who never show up. Stop micro managing everything because it makes it more difficult to do out job.
