I worked at John Carroll University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-Wonderful benefits for exempt employees - very generous vacation schedule along with a more than usual amount of paid holidays. 37.5 hour work weeks plus tuition benefits. These are the reasons most people stay and deal with the management BS.
-The HR department has come a long way in the last few years, offering much more training and opportunities for development at all levels.
-In general, employees are treated well but there is a chasm between exempt and non-exempt staff.
    - Relativity progressive for a Catholic organization - thanks Jesuits!

    Cons

-Lower pay than most other higher education institutions in the area.
-Upper Administration is very slow to act and resistant to change.
    - Division VPs have too much power over human resources; meaning how you are treated, if HR best-practices are followed/allowed, if you are given an annual review, and if you are fully allowed to participate in organizational mission opportunities is based on which division you are in. This also means that the VPs aren't disciplined for bad management or borderline harassment-type behavior.
    - Upper administration is non-transparent in operations/governance decisions, especially in the nonacademic divisions.
-Current administration has driven the budget and enrollment into the ground, causing deep financial issues.
-The VPs scapegoat lower-level employees when things like tuition revenue, budget, and enrollment forecasting is wrong or goals are not achieved. They stay and get positive recognition while their staff gets fired/laid off/blamed.
-Not much room for internal career growth

    Advice to Management

Stop giving lip-service to things like 360-reviews and university-wide meetings and actually DO something with the information you gather. After 5 years, it seems to be that employees get more opportunities to talk but nothing is ever acted on.
