I have been working at John Deere full-time

    Pros

Culture, integrity, global company, relationship based company. Excellent skills all around. Good people. Excellent work culture all around. Good leadership.

    Cons

Consensus driven company. Very difficult to let under-performers go. As with any company, there is politics in middle and upper management.

    Advice to Management

Clean up middle management with a fixed mindset

I worked at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, solid benefits package, great variable comp opportunities. Company mission is also very endearing.

    Cons

Company has gone all in on diversity to the point diverse people are being put in positions they are not ready for at the expense of white males. Also has done a lot of mid-career hiring from top schools into middle management and they are only interested in self promotion and visibility. Servant leadership has given way to self serving leadership.

    Advice to Management

The recent mid-career hires from top schools need to understand they don't know everything and should listen to people doing the work.

I worked at John Deere full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Deere is a well-managed company with a great history. Its products help feed the world, and the firm genuinely cares about customers, dealers, and employees. For those willing to relocate throughout the duration of their career, the opportunities are large.

    Cons

Frequent relocation unless you are willing to only live in the QCA, Des Moines, or Waterloo.

    Advice to Management

Deere is getting too distant from its dealers - with the reduction of the size of the field sales team, and with dealers much bigger capabilities, there is a lot less dealer and retail knowledge finding its way back to the company. This is hurting decision making and restraining opportunities at the retail level.

I worked at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantastic company that has excellent pay and benefits. They are great on work life balance. Everyone is very professional and they want to do what is right for Deere. Best training for employees of any company I have ever worked for. Great offices and factories, very clean and modern. Great on the use of technology. Truly a "World Class" company.

    Cons

Many of the promotions are based on who you know and networking versus results (what you accomplish) and hard work.

I have been working at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Values are great. Integrity is the most important.
    Great work life balance.

    Cons

Decisions of promotions are based on who you know. If you don't have the right connections, you will not advance even if you are qualified. Job Posting process works in low ranks, but it does not work in higher levels because hiring managers have already pre-selected the candidate that they know; they follow the posting procedure just to provide a false sense of fairness.
The skill that is most valued is public speaking. Level of education or technical skills are not valued, unless the company sends you to executive education programs in their selected group of universities.

    Advice to Management

Consider great employees that you have internally and have been neglected. Challenge the ultimate potential rating of people based on subjective evaluation from biased managers. Employee engagement decreases significantly every time that employees that have not achieved their ultimate potential are not considered for promotions because they do not have the connections with a high level manager.

I worked at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Professional, challenging, innovative, ethical, competitive, and rewarding!

    Cons

Staff resources can be limited, a lot of expected hours (however with some offsetting time off), heavy email traffic, can be heavy expected travel.

    Advice to Management

Break the glass ceiling at Grade 8-9. A little less contract staff employees!

I have been working at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Deere is a company that is driven by its foundational values of integrity, quality, innovation and commitment, where employees are encouraged to "do the right thing" at all times.

    Cons

It is a Midwestern Company that is doing business globally; not a global Company based in the Midwest. There are not many opportunities if an employee cannot physically move to a physical office, which are not in metro areas.

    Advice to Management

Engage in telework to attract, retain and promote top talent. Do not let physical location be a primary reason to hire or promote personnel.

I have been working at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Culture of honesty and integrity is real and reinforced by actions & decisions
Strong push for innovation/technology (especially for such a large, long lasting company)
Diverse workforce for the communities they are located in
Competitive pay and benefits including pension, great 401k match & bonuses
Great company strategy with consistent say/do ratio
Extremely supportive of community service, especially mentoring kids / STEM
    Internally developed leaders

    Cons

Work/life balance is dependent on position and manager - but generally good
Some smaller locations may require you to move around the company to advance past a certain level in order to get varying experiences

I have been working at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive Salaries, Work-life Balance in Corporate Offices, Supports People Development

    Cons

180 year old culture is solidly entrenched and will not change or adapt to the 21st century. Not a good company to work at if you have good ideas or embrace change, you will be derailed or cast out. Career growth paths seem to favor mostly those with farming backgrounds, females and those with a military background. Cronyism and nepotism is still pervasive but in all fairness, part of this is perpetuated by the fact the company has difficulty attracting folks outside Illinois and Iowa due to less than desirable work locations scattered in small, obscure communities lacking amenities and quality of life.

    Advice to Management

You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.

I have been working at John Deere full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable company. There are lots of job opportunities within the many divisions of Deere. Opportunity to work all over the country

    Cons

There's very much a good old boys club still alive. They promote their inner circle and don't base it off of accomplishments. Very frustrating to crack into.

    Advice to Management

Your pay structure needs to be revamped. People should be rewarded for the work they do not based off a grid.
