I have been working at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital full-time

    Pros

Workplace diversity! This is like a United Nations Hospital...Good insurance and benefits...

    Cons

Top down management. They expect you to perform a miracle : to do an excellent service without adequate manpower and resources: persistent understaffing, low work morale among workers...

    Advice to Management

The hospital is short-staffed, no adequate manpower, supplies and resources and demands excellence care from staff. The people who retired were not being replaced.Workers are doing the job of 3-4 people and they demand that workers be excellent and efficient? Try to be realistic....

I have been working at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pathology, cushy pension plan for those who qualify, wide diversity of patients, salary pretty good when compared to academic institutions, if you like calling in sick, this is the hospital to work for....staff like to call in sick particularly nurses, and on monday, fridays, near holidays.

    Cons

administration constantly raising amount of clinical responsibilities so this leaves very little time for other academic pursuits. Retirement plans are dismal if you're not part of the old pension plan, poor leadership with a vision that makes sense but with no plan- it's pretty much do without planning it through and with little communication to staff about changes, very poor morale overall among the physicians particularly in the medicine departments, and relatively high turnover due to the multiple changes. If you're wanting to work here, just understand that it's a unique environment and that there are multiple changes going on. Don't be surprised if your clinical duties increase or change in some way every 3-4 months. Be prepared to do a lot of things by yourself that in any other institution someone else would do. Multiple IT issues....we've had at least 30x in the past year when the entire electronic chart system went down. Poor professionalism overall....it is not surprising that we didn't do so great when JHACO came. Dirty hospital due to old facilities and poor cleaning. If you see a cockroach or some type of insect in a patient room, it is not rare. Hospital here is trying to become competitive, and in a way, giving priority care to many of the insured patients which makes you wonder why you are in a county hospital to begin with. It's a shame.

    Advice to Management

listen to your physicians before they leave. many are just staying for the pension plan, while the others are just waiting to leave when the required 10 years are up
