    Swire management training programme

Mar 29, 2020 - Management Trainee in Hong Kong
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Opportunity to work internationally throughout Asia Lots of training (entirely soft skills though) Opportunities to build relationships with senior management Good benefits - housing, relocation, medical insurance Amazing work life balance

    Cons

No commercial responsibility given within first 3-5 years Lots of learning by osmosis and minute taking Very limited transferrable skills - trainees are too generalist to be of much use to other organizations Poor incentive scheme rewards slackers Stale pool of management talent where most people are from the same background

Good opportunity and package, not very flexible / diverse

Feb 5, 2020 - Management Trainee in Hong Kong
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good exposure - access to senior leaders, different job rotations in different departments / companies Good salary / housing allowance / relatively good annual leave for HK (starting at 20 days)

    Cons

No choice where you work / what role you do, therefore can't drive your career yourself. Promotions / roles don't seem to be based on performance, rather the number of years service. No motivation to perform well to progress faster. Not flexible - no work from home, only 3 months maternity leave, not having a choice in location means you're expected to move wherever you are told - not very realistic if you have a partner who also has a career... Culture is not very diverse - they basically employ a lot of people from very privileged backgrounds, if you don't fit this can be hard to 'fit in'.

Can be fun and rewarding, but can be frustrating, slow, and resistant to innovate

Aug 25, 2018 - Management Trainee, House Staff in Hong Kong
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

As an MT, the company invests a great deal in developing your inter-personal skills, and good training is provided. For MTs, and especially House Staff, there are very good opportunities available to you to live and work in multiple different countries. Some roles based in HK also include significant travel opportunities. In some operating companies you will be given challenging management roles early on. Package is decent for graduate scheme. Occasionally you will work with a brilliant boss

    Cons

Extremely traditional company which manifests in some negative ways: Extremely hierarchical Company has been very slow to embrace D&I policies. LGBTQ colleagues do not receive equitable access to benefits. Provision for maternity leave and other related issues is uncompetitive, and management appear to be resistant to improve. Management does not reflect its very diverse employee base. Senior leaders do not believe that it is important to pay attention to capital market demands and trends, nor to benchmark performance against others. defensive attitude towards minority shareholders. No IR team. Many senior leaders do not listen to experts and prefer to rule by diktat and/or micro-manage. Senior leaders often find it challenging to give clear direction or feedback. It is not clear what the over-all business strategy is. No centralized control of most major back office departments (e.g. no central branding team or internal comms team to coordinate between various touchpoints) which can result in unprofessional outcomes. Restricting training to MTs means that many other skilled staff get frustrated by a lack of professional development opportunities and leave. Not an innovative company. No one willing to speak truth to power. Claims to have a long-term value view - but rarely demonstrates this in actions.
