    Positive Outlook

I have been working at John Wayne Cancer Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are the best. with HSA account. The work environment is very nice and friendly and management is very professional

    Cons

The HR is extremely inexperience in what they are doing. If you need them, they will definitely mess it up at least once. here is not much food options on the walking distance. The cafeteria in the hospital across the street is just bad. To keep up with the traffic in Santa Monica, you need to give up the routine life balance.

    Advice to Management

I think the management is really good. it might be harsh, but I really think good work is appreciated and everyone knows.

I have been working at John Wayne Cancer Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI) feels like a small business. Everyone is very personable and supportive. As an employee, you can quickly realize your direct influence on the day-to-day running of the Institute.

    Cons

JWCI used to be a power house in the cancer research arena. However, with the passing of its patriarch, Dr. Donald Morton, several years ago the Institute lost much of its momentum. Recently, there has been somewhat of a renaissance happening with a new flock of research investigators, but there has been a noticeable absence of focused management.

    Advice to Management

Manage the financials with greater awareness of departmental spending. Build a better partnership between Foundation resources and the Research Investigators to insure a more consistent donation stream of revenue.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at John Wayne Cancer Institute part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, good collaboration with St. John's Health Center, solid research program.

    Cons

Somewhat difficult to advance career. Upper management has no understanding of what is happening throughout the institute in terms of politics and funding. Some people who don't contribute very much to the institute are still mysteriously employed. This is demoralizing.

    Advice to Management

Find trustworthy CEO's with a solid understanding of the importance of research to the Institute. There is a disconnect between Development and Research programs. Need to get feedback from PI's and employees about what they need to do their jobs.
