I have been working at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I have been at APL for a little over a year. The variety of interesting (and fun!) projects, very supportive environment (it is clear my peers and supervisors/managers value my input and want me to succeed), and education/career growth opportunities make me want to stay here for many more years to come. I also enjoy flex time, and being able to work from home if needed.

    Cons

The lab is geared towards science/engineering, so if your work doesn't involve developing the next widget, it can be hard to get visibility when applying for internal grants. Also, I wish they would increase the training budget.

    Advice to Management

    Continue the innovation initiatives!

I have been working at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Good compensation, low pressure, mostly engaging work

    Cons

Low pressure can be a negative as much as it is a positive. Sometimes the work can be a bit staid, as well

    Advice to Management

    Care more about your employees

    Pros

Working on some really cool things, lots of opportunity, everyone is really smart, and being able to take college courses.

    Cons

A little isolated from everything else in the area. I didn't mind it, but there was no public transit if you wanted to live further away.

I worked at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

APL has many interesting problems and one is surrounded by top quality scientists and engineers who are fundamentally interested in science and not just the deliverables.

    Cons

multiple projects and tight deadlines sometimes mean that you cannot afford to spend the time on certain problems which are otherwise deserving.

    Pros

Great mission, great vision for the future, great people. This is one of the best places in the nation to work.

Some middle managers don't want the boat rocked. Try to embrace change. It is going to happen in any case.

I have been working at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting, meaningful projects that often require you to work on interdisciplinary teams. Education benefits are excellent and promote lifelong learning.

    Cons

Management styles can vary significantly, which can be problematic since APL has moved away from formal written performance reviews.

    Advice to Management

Continue bringing in challenging work that requires collaboration and innovation that only an organization like APL can provide. Work with line managers to develop strategies for mentoring new staff and retaining high performers.
