      Thinking Happens Here

      Oct 6, 2021 - Senior Professional Staff I

      Business Outlook

      Pros

At the laboratory you work in an environment of technically competent people who value science, technology, creativity, hard work, and employee wellbeing. Mathematicians, physicists, engineers, computer scientists, and other subject matter experts collaborate to solve challenging problems. We have the option to participate in academic collaborations and to publish research based on the problems we solve at the lab. The company is selective in choosing high quality employees, gives them a good salary and benefits, and keeps them until they retire so that expertise remains within the company. This makes APL stable, reliable, and innovative for both customers and employees. While working here you will feel like you are doing something good in the world. It is also a stable place to raise a family. It is completely the opposite of the cut-throat revolving door practices of other companies where hiring is run by Machiavellian third-party hiring companies.

      Cons

The laboratory is located in between Baltimore and Washington, DC which is suboptimal for many employees causing some of them to commute from over an hour away. The reason is simple - the company attracts people who want to raise families and Maryland is not a good place to raise a family.

      The perfect place to work

Dec 8, 2018 - Data Scientist in Laurel, MD

      Pros

They have great opportunities for staff to submit innovative ideas to get funded. APL also reimburses employees' tuition for classes through JHU - a great way to continue education. It's great to see a company that cares about their employees' growth. The benefits are fantastic, and the hours are reasonable (great work-life balance). The company is also large enough that you can get a feel for many different areas of work. I only left to pursue a PhD, but I hope to return to the lab some day.

      Cons

If you're coming from the private sector, it takes a while to understand the acronyms and culture of a company that mostly works with the military. The location is also challenging, with difficult commutes to either Baltimore or DC and no public transportation.

      Interesting work and Flexible schedule

Sep 21, 2018 - Software Developer in Laurel, MD

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - easy to move around and design your own career path - fun, interesting work available across a variety of fields - opportunities for growth - great benefits - flexible schedule - clubs, activities, sports leagues - young professional network

      Cons

      - not the best location for young professionals if you want a city, but close to Baltimore and DC - no snow days, have to use vacation or work at home which can be difficult based on the nature of your work - some groups consider others 'the competition' rather than collaborators - can be difficult to work with others across the lab that aren't in your group or department

      Pros

Great place to work! They value employees comfort and well being.

      Cons

Laurel, MD is a rather expensive area. Also, transiting in and out of the area can take a lot of time due to heavy Baltimore/ DC traffic.

      A good place to grow

Jan 21, 2015 - Associate Staff I (Engineer) in Laurel, MD

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great facilities and mentorship. Also a good retirement plan.

      Cons

There is no shuttle service linking the lab to public trasportation (e.g. the Laurel MARC, Greenbelt station) or to the main JHU campus in Baltimore. Also, they got rid of the library. Both factors made me less excited working there as a young person.
