I have been working at Johns Manville full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There is a lot of growth potential here, but you have to fight hard for it. Employees are encouraged to learn all aspects of the business and get exposure to everything. Compensation and benefits are well thought out and generous. The recently renovated work space is inspirational.

    Cons

If you have a degree in engineering, you can write your ticket at JM - an endless source of frustration for everyone else. In many ways, creativity and innovation a stifled by too much linear thinking. The company is a little old fashioned, but they're working on it. There is "old-guard" leadership at the director level throughout the company, so a lot of "that's how we've always done it" and demanding that up and comers "pay their dues" - totally detrimental to knowledge transfer.

    Advice to Management

Give credence to employees with degrees other than engineering. Look for and foster real leaders - not just the loudest. Lead the pack in terms of innovation - green building, etc. Don't just wait for someone else to do it - even if the market isn't ready, it's coming so have a plan on the shelf.

Ownership structure is remarkable - JM is a Berkshire Hathaway portfolio company.
    Management takes a long-term view.

    Cons

Hire for skills not necessarily train good people into roles.
Lean staffing across most business and functional groups - challenging to pursue opportunities outside job role.
Cyclical businesses tied to construction and industrial markets.

    Advice to Management

    Decentralize decision-making.
Allow employees more latitude to try things but hold them accountable.

I worked at Johns Manville full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people at JM are super to work with. Our team was extremely busy, but genuinely enjoyed the culture and atmosphere.

    Cons

Being such a lean company the job can be overwhelming. Instead of assisting our sales team, we often spent time correcting other's mistakes.

    Advice to Management

Increase headcount to allow us to be more proactive. Too much time is spent putting out fires.

I worked at Johns Manville (Less than a year)

    Pros

Growing, aggressive company. Opportunity to learn new areas and expand your experience. Benefits were very competitive.

    Cons

The plant that I worked in was very difficult to affect change due to Union environment and because the product being made there was losing market share. Rest of division was growing.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be consistency in how employees and departments are treated based on performance. Several areas were under-performing, but only one or two of those areas were being addressed.

    Pros

Very stable company. They treat you well, provide great training, pay is fair, offices downtown are beautiful, and coworkers are great.

    Cons

I didn't care for the vacation policy and the zero work from home opportunities... this is 2015, get with it!

Also, there is very little recognition. Sometime people need more than 3.0 to stay motivated.
