I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ability to work independently. Manage your own schedule/business/travel. The industry is loaded with long time employees. Business owners/customers for this role are down to earth and very easy to talk with.

    Cons

Training for new products is minimal and not executed well. Development of valuable product training to the sales team is critical. Employees will not speak out to push better training.

    Advice to Management

    No

I have been working at Johnson Controls as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great People and positive trend

    Cons

Too many chiefs with different objectives.

    Advice to Management

Decentralize, but standardize. Stop trying to control everything in Milwaukee and just standardize your system (SAP). Every plant manufacture's processes are the same so stop customizing the system to suit one Plant Manager's needs. Say "see BI".

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Large company with a commitment to creating Green Workplaces (Buildings) and the engineering within. Stable environment, use current methodologies and high tech solutions.

    Cons

The executive team has become scandal ridden. Corporate Office abandoned the USA for Ireland after the last purchase. Outsourced all of IT except a skeleton crew.

    Advice to Management

    Remember where your roots are.

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent starting Pay and Benefits, pockets of great employees and teams, good core product lines and services.

    Cons

Ridiculous year after year cost cutting goals, causing intra-department adversarial environment and not based on reality or what good companies measure.
Annual goals are not tied to the actual work employees are asked to do.
No work life balance as areas that need more people cannot get them.
Annual travel bans are a joke as only followed by some.
Cost cutting & travel bans impacting training.
    Advancement is extremely limited.

    Advice to Management

Set reasonable stretch goals that are tied to what employees real jobs are, if you are holding an employee accountable for an outcome, then give them the authority to make changes that will impact the outcome.
Require all departments to follow common sense travel guidelines year round and a ban should not be needed.
Centralize departments and functions that support the common categories across all business units to reduce costs, streamline processes, and eliminate walls and confusion.
Require workloads to be reasonable so there is a real work/life balance.
Add staff to those central functions that are seriously understaffed and not to the overlapping business areas.
Reward good, hardworking employees going the extra-mile and taking on additional work.
Management should live and support the values the company preaches.

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pays very well. There are some good people in the company

    Cons

JCI focuses on looking good and not on being successful. Corporate profits often times come from selling off a JCI owned company that was destroyed after it became too top-heavy from JCI and can no longer be profitable.
People use buzzwords extensively when they demand someone do their work for them, but those same people have no idea what those buzzwords mean. Nothing ever gets done.
VP's and Directors come and go and leave behind end-trails of initiatives they installed in order to make names for themselves. These initiatives result in bog down systems further preventing anyone from accomplishing anything of value.

    Advice to Management

Use programs like SAP only for areas like Finance and Accounting. Stop forcing these systems into areas where they don't belong and completely shut down progress.
Stop adding bureaucratic layers for approvals so changes can get done

    Pros

Global company that provides great work experience, co-workers and environment.

    Cons

Constant change and lots of unknowns with merger and leadership changes. Unprecedented change and more is anticipated to come. It's the new norm and everyone is determining what it means for them and if they want to stay in this chaotic environment.

    Advice to Management

Employees have change fatigue and there is a need for Sr. Leaders to be better at Change Management. We say that we are doing change management but it's not happening across the company.

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Smart and creative people. It is a good environment for high performers and vocal people. Pay is very good and above market average. If you are in Wisconsin you will not find other companies that pay the same for a comparable role. Great benefits. Gym on site but don't expect to use much (it is a slacker trap). If you have time to go to the gym means you don't have much work to do.

    Cons

Financial goals are so stretched that people have to dance to make it rain. You give 100%, company want 200%. Ultimately you deliver 130% and fell bad for missing the goals. Very poor recognition process. It went from an award trophy to a certificate and then having your name show in a ppt presentation. There are constant travel and hiring freezes. Restructuring happens every year/other year, so there is the constant concern of being let go. Management has its favorites and if you don't make the list it is very hard to move around.

    Advice to Management

Put your customers and people ahead of your shareholders. This short term mentality focuses on improving results at any cost and leaves customers and employees behind. People work at companies not only for the money but also for a challenging career, recognition and the feeling that you are contributing to the world.
