I worked at Joie de Vivre full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A supportive company that takes care of its employees as well as it takes care of its guests!

    Cons

The company benefits program wasn't the best.

I worked at Joie de Vivre full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Employees were pleasant to each other and managers were approachable and easy to talk to, especially Danielle and Leo. The location is easily accessible if you are taking public transportation as well. The FOH employees are still very guest-oriented even though short-staffed.

    Cons

Training was very tough and almost non-existent due to being short-staffed. The "birthday celebrations" were mainly celebrated by managers and none of the employees with the actual birthdays during the month...Employees and managers, specially HR are also being stretched VERY thinly causing long time employees to leave, low morale, and high employee turnover rate. Employees also complain a lot and it creates an unpleasant working environment for others. Upper management also didn't seem to care as much as they said they did, or maybe they were too stressed out?

In conclusion, it felt like the merge with Destination Hotels didn't really benefit this property. It's more just a cash cow because of it's location.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees' concerns and suggestions, show your support rather than just saying it, and advocate for your employees. Stretching your staff thin will eventually break even the best and most loyal employees.

I have been working at Joie de Vivre full-time

    Pros

Several opportunities to cross train and work on creative projects for the company.

    Cons

    Union environment at most hotels.

I worked at Joie de Vivre full-time

    Pros

Was a very happy place to work, truly understood and wanted to cater to customers in a hospitable and fun way.

    Cons

Once the company sold, it just went south. Same as all the other management companies now, not true hospitality companies, only trying to make a dollar for real estate investment trusts.

I have been working at Joie de Vivre full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

More independent, can take lunches and breaks when convenient, can make quick work-errands if needed at my leisure, start and finish my own work no need to pass on duties I can see everything through. Great way to get your foot in the door to become manager. Lots of opportunities to observe and participate in managerial meetings, finding solutions and making important decisions.

    Cons

Some managerial duties may fall on this department, but no manager perks. However, that's a part of the upwards ladder anywhere you go.

    Advice to Management

Offer more opportunities to train those in this position who want to move up, especially in the company.

I have been working at Joie de Vivre full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

JDV lets you be yourself. There's no corporate script on what you can say or do. Gives the employees freedom to be professional but have fun. I've been able to cultivate relationships with frequent guests.

    Cons

The company is changing and that does create some chaos. What worked last week might not work next week.

    Advice to Management

    Figure yourselves out.
