    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Some great people in the rank and file.

    Cons

Very hard place for women and people of color; some departments are old boy's clubs that are impossible to break with the current mentality. Those on the outside get the worst assignments or are on thin ice. Real dog-eat-dog.

    Advice to Management

Yearly employee surveys are a joke. Everyone is too scared of retribution to be honest. Stop taking everything at face value.

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Semiconductor equipment company with great products (Gen 5) in a wafer measurement, metrology and inspection. Merger with Lam did not go through but its culture is unique and its better that way. Can do better if products are cheaper but ops cost is high and outsourcing is out of control.

    Cons

Management is focused on how to sustain the status quo, a lot of politics, lay offs, not a place for a career growth. Competition between middle and top management, nothing new in the semiconductor sector except fierce politics. Nobody cares about engineers and their training and advancements.

    Advice to Management

This is an engineering company not a political institution. Get your priorities strait, let engineers do their job and give them fair time off and compensation.

    Pros

Easy introduction to team, thorough top level introduction to project architecture, direct access to entire code base. Management gives complete presentation of team goals. Code base is in relatively good condition. Quality of computer capability well above average.

    Cons

No written records of design requirements or response available only study of base code is possible creating schedule delays. Former personnel may not be interviewed for their understanding. There is no written schedule and archaic technology is preserved at the cost to progress even if it damages the goals of the department.

    Advice to Management

Modernization must be supported even if middle management must be forced to learn new technologies or the company's competitive edge will be lost. This support must come from the VP of engineering level or middle management will sacrifice all for their comfort.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good pay, somewhat flexible hours

    Cons

culture is very dry, not a fun place to work. Very work oriented, not people oriented. Merger happening soon so everyone is trying to help themselves not others

    Advice to Management

Encourage a more personable atmosphere. Train lower managers on how to be a good manager. Many managers are not able to teach their employees how to do the job because they have too little time.

There are opportunities to move within the company, although they are competitive

    Cons

As an Applications Engineer, you are treated as expendable and will be abused. There is an issue with developing valuable skills

    Advice to Management

Allow applications engineers to learn skills that will keep them interested and encourage them to stay

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You will be kept busy. Extremely busy. There hasn't been a day where I spend countless hours in meetings and more hours at home at night and evenings doing more work to catch up.

    Cons

Forget the work-life/leisure balance...You will work. The entire industry is getting smaller and smaller every year. Employees will do 3X more than what we originally did back in the early '90s.

    Advice to Management

Take a close look at your employees, especially after the recent June 2015 layoffs. They are struggling to keep up with the workload. Nothing has changed; same number of projects.

    Pros

    Cutting edge systems.
Many intelligent team members, that are hard working.
Wide variety of technology and problems to work on, so it can be interesting

    Cons

Semi is getting tighter, KLA-Tencor is getting even tighter. Margins will drop.
NO work life balance, you can work until 1am every night if you can

    Advice to Management

Plan on margins dropping, its a mature market.
People are what fills the building and makes the systems, not numbers

Very big difference from department to department.

    Cons

Managers are not honest to customers and as a result it is uncomfortable for employee to participate in this lie.
