    Pros

Decent experience and benefits, respectable starting salary for first job

    Cons

Feel like a cog in the machine, engineers drive the company decision making, finance teams seem like an afterthought culturally and resources-wise, upward mobility not good

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very challeging and interesting state of the art instruments developed here by a lot of very smart people. Leads the industry in almost every tool. Good teamwork to resolve issues. Facility and benefits are good and management is flexible as long as you get your job done.

    Cons

Pace is very fast and no such thing as 40 hour work week. Industry goes in boom bust cycles so they lay off a lot of extremely talented staff in the down turns. Moving manufacturing off shore. Tends to be ultra paranoid of high inventory levels at the expense of profits and effeciency.

    Advice to Management

Should minimize layoffs during down turn as can't bounce back when good times return.

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People are smart, decent benefits, good place to learn "soft" skills straight out of school. People on the mechanical team are all level headed and easy to work with. You learn a lot the first year to year and a half. I would leave after that.

    Cons

    1. Politics and risk mitigation. Any design that deviates from past designs will be shot down immediately. Who is pitching the concept seems to matter more than the concept itself during CDRs.
    2. Concepts and designs are never validated on a subsystem level. Thus, there is never any data to properly evaluate how well a design works and furthermore never the data required to give design specs for the next system.
    3. Projects are always understaffed and schedules are not founded in reality. In my three years at the company, not once had I finished a project on time. This is common place. Do not buy into being behind schedule. It will only create unnecessary stress in your life. Work hard, but know you will never get ahead and the harder you work the more work will be dumped on you.

I left because I felt the group did not do "real" engineering, there is no clear path for upward mobility within the group, and the machine that is FaST is too frustrating to work within. With the current KT-LAM proposed acquisition, shedding of talent, and lack of interesting work, it made sense to leave.

    Advice to Management

    1. Listen to your employees. You have all these grand ideas and proposals laid out during the Engineering Conference and then there is no follow through.
    2. Throw your employees a bone every once in a while. Direct managers should personally acknowledge individuals when they put in extra hours, work weekends, or implement a well received design.
    3. Validate designs with data, not just gut feelings.
    4. Staff the optical department and get rid of those who don't play nice with others.

    Pros

The company still has big market share. The company still has high performing engineers. The company is still profiting ok.

    Cons

The whole market is shrinking, and the company is under pressure.
Bureaucracy has been building too much.
People relationship is taking too much impact.

    Advice to Management

Strategy gets lost when executed to lowest level.
Cross disciplinary collaboration should be taken as more important than within disciplinary collaboration.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Problem Statements are really good and provide opportunity to explore

    Cons

Company is too political and does not value ideas. Only 20% employees actually work on state of the art, rest all is just software work.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

People and Benefits are really great. Everyone here is very nice. Sometimes it is difficult to get a straight answer on information you are seeking.

    Cons

Milpitas Commute North can be a beast and there does not seem to be much in the way of alternate commute alternatives. I would hope that a Bart system would eventually come to this area.

    Advice to Management

There seem to be a lot of managers and it is surprising how heavy the workload is on most of the administrative staff company wide. Multiple teams and executives being supported by a single individual.

    Pros

Not much to add to this section

    Cons

While we (TSEs) were payed in Salary, we had to work 10 to 14 hrs while abroad; be on-call on the weekends and night. But all changed when we were payed hourly. No more than 8 hours daily and no more than 10 hours when we flew out.
