I worked at KLA-Tencor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Focused company. Willing to send people and spend effort for customers. Top management does deep dives, keeping GMs and Senior Director's on their toes.

    Cons

Being a software person, KLA-Tencor does not value software products. Only software for tools. It makes sense. But may not be right for everyone.

    Pros

Best in their field at attracting amazing talent and generating new technologies. Willing to spend money to "win" in many ways and everyone seems committed to a top quality product. Despite this, work/life balance is pretty good for semiconductor. Supporting systems like IT, MCAD, Oracle/SAP, etc don't have many issues.

    Cons

Work environment sometimes difficult as some folks were very political. Lots of silo-ing between teams and divisions. HR extremely slow to respond to staff changes of a big enough magnitude, and outright chooses to not compete with larger companies on a salary basis. Some great managers, but others that simply have no grasp of time and budget requirements to deliver a certain outcome.

    Advice to Management

The failure of the LAM merger is an opportunity to rebound from significant staff thinning, get focused, and become agile again.

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Rotation program, good people, cafeteria, work life balance. I very much enjoyed the people I was able to work with during my time at KLA Tencor.

    Cons

Somewhat political, somewhat big company you can get lost in the shuffle. Not a lot of extra benefits like you would find at hot new companies.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing most of what you are doing. Company communication at the corporate level is good. Day to day communication was just OK, could improve.

    Pros

Great for getting experience with a wide skill range and customer/semi industry information. Self-paced advancement with a lot of career directions possible.

    Cons

Work-life balance can be challenging, but this is the time to make a mark for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

Push for better work-life balance to retain talent.

    Pros

Lots of smart and dedicated people. Employees stay at this company for a long time and the benefits are great. Upper management knows what they are doing. Great culture of hard working and promotes innovation.

    Cons

The company is merging with Lam Research, I think this will change the culture of KLA. Long hours, some politics especially within the IT department.

    Advice to Management

Look at the real value of the projects from IT.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Top notch employees/coworkers, great company values, great development training from the Corporate Learning Center, HR business partners who actually care about you, lots of opportunity to learn new things and make your job more efficient, good gym, flexible work hours (make it to meetings, get your job done, and you can shift your hours as needed to accommodate kid activities when needed, etc.)

    Cons

We are being acquired and not everyone is taking it well, even if their jobs are known to be fairly secure; the current climate can be a little political because of that. Big raises are hard to come by; they are probably harder to come by in the current climate. So if you come to work here, make sure you negotiate good starting pay.

    Advice to Management

With some of the org changes, many employees were put into roles they didn't choose, working for managers they didn't apply to. Listen to what they want to do in the future and find a path for them to get there (even if it's a longer-term one) so they don't feel ignored and can focus on their current jobs. If employees feel like K-T will help them get where they want to go in the future if they work hard now, they can stop stressing about the future and focus more on what's needed today.
