    Great company to work for

    Pros

At KLA-Tencor, you'll be working alongside many talented engineers and scientists, and the ones I've worked with are usually willing to share their knowledge and expertise, which is a good thing for personal development.

    Cons

It gets stressful here at times, especially during the downturn of the industry. Although it's common practice for semiconductor companies to layoff staff when profit is down, KLA-Tencor has taken it a little too far in this regard. Morale was really low among employees after the second reduction in force. Also benefits are now close to non-existent.

    Cons

Always Layoff 5-10%, products not standards, large amount of meeting, management only need the goal but don't aware the process.

Each division is like its own company.

    Pros

If you want to change jobs, there are so many divisions that no matter what you want to do, there is a place for you. You do not need to look outside the company, as each division has its own management style and culture that is completely unique. Benefits are great. Even the layoff packages are generous.

    Cons

You and your accomplishments can get lost in this big company. You must be active in getting your name out.

    Sweatshop

    Pros

Opportunity to grow professionally among the team of highly qualified peers is the best part of KT experience. It is a good professional school that will prepare you to a career at any another company. 5 years at KT is time well invested. More will be hazardous to your health.

    Cons

Sweatshop, constant threat of a layoff without regard to seniority and/or contributions, 60 hours weeks is considered normal, 75-80 hours will sooner or later get you a promotion, 50 hrs a week is a ticket to the next layoff. Offshoring hard core engineering work (both HW and SW) hurts morale and bottom line. Compensation tends to be on a lower side compared to competition.

Competitive company supplying a mature industry.

    Pros

Good benefits Opportunities for engineers and scientists to work on bleeding edge tech aimed at semiconductor manufacturing. Customer demand pushes the R&D and engineering to very short wavelengths, very fast robotics and positioning, wicked fast image processing, and very precise measurements..

    Cons

The bottom line is the first line. SemiCap equipment is very cyclical, and KLAC is well known in Silicon Valley for laying people off whenever there's a downturn. There is a reputation, whose truth varies from division to division, of this leading to people and groups hoarding skills and information to make them irreplaceable and layoff-resistant. To be fair, I've heard this mostly from ex-KLAC employees. The location in Milpitas at the McCarthy Ranch intersection of 237 and 880 can be a commute nightmare More and more manufacturing has been shipped overseas, so there is significant 24/7 drift in requirements for senior people to be up early or late for meetings with Europe, Israael, China, etc.
