I have been working at KPMG full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Big 4 on your resume
    - Plenty of resources at the firm and from those who leave in the future
    - Young culture at the staff/senior/manager levels

    Cons

    - Seasons are getting longer these days....more like 6+ months of the year
    - Office Politics - if you don't play you won't make it far
    - Resource management is always hungry for 100% utilization regardless of how much sense it makes

I have been working at KPMG full-time

    Pros

I am writing the review because I sincerely want to warn people who want to join KPMG think twice. My review will not apply to every team in the Deal Advisory.

Most people I work with are smart, hardworking and friendly. Sometimes, managers get demanding. But I understand it is not personal, it is just because either the client is demanding or the upper management is.
Decent amount of vacation days. (But I see people have to work while on vacation...)
There are lots of opportunities of networking.
Opportunities of learning many new things in a short of time even though it can get stressful.

    Cons

The biggest challenge for me is work/life balance. Hours are unpredictable, meaning you start at 8:30 or 9 and you don't know when the end is...And prepare to work at weekends. If you are single and live close to the office, you probably would be more tolerable with the hours. But for people who have family and live in the suburbs, it gets really tough.

Working environment is not good: no private cube. People sit, work, eat and have calls in the same conference room. It is a mess...Not comfortable at all. I sometimes feel I am a slave in the room and have to tolerate with people's constant talks unrelated to work.

Overall salary is OK. But given the long hours, the hourly pay is really low...

    Advice to Management

Working long hours may just be the the nature of Consulting and Big 4. But I hope management can realise the this nature is not humane.

    Pros

Good learning, compensation, development, smart people, and the firm does genuinely seem to care about its employees.

    Cons

Work life balance can be bad. Some groups (Deal Advisory) are very cliquey, which can influence your career advancement.

I have been working at KPMG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The framework is there for KPMG to be a good company for which to work.

-There are many ways to get engaged at the company, from diversity programs, to literacy, to running clubs. Tons of way to get involved.
    - Tends to be very well-mannered. You won't hear the "f-bomb" too often
    - Pays well (Full disclosure -- I entered at the executive level)
    - Benefits are fine (but I have always worked for a large company so I would say they are on par for large companies)
    - offices are ok - there are some new ones being built, but the old one are ok too -- just a little boring looking

    Cons

The largest con is that none of the above will matter at all if you are assigned to a bad partner -- and there are plenty of them. There are tons of middle-aged, white men with decaying skills desperately trying to stay relevant. If you end of working for one of these folks, you are in for it!
    - no face-to-face discussions
    - HIGHLY political
    - No sense of meritocracy -- only matters if a partner likes you. If you are liked, then you are safe and regularly promoted (regardless of your skill)
    - Because the skills are decaying and the need to stay relevant is strong - the environment tends to be very fearful. People are scared - so scared.
    - Even though the company really wants to stand for integrity - this environment of fear is driving very bad behavior- Google KPMG South Africa or KPMG PCAOB. Everyone acts SO SHOCKED every time this happens, but it is because the company is so darn scared it is driving partners to behave badly. Don't get me wrong, there are some great partners and if you are assigned to one of the good ones, you will probably enjoy your time at KPMG - a lot. However, there is no way to enjoy the company if you are assigned to one of the bad ones. Honestly, I have met more bad than good.

    Advice to Management

Judiciously prune your partner ranks. You should ask for employee reviews of partners so you get some insight.

I have been working at KPMG full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

KPMG has an innate ability to find amazing people, who make coming to work a pleasure. We are exposed to some of the world's largest institutions and get a unique experience to see into industry while remaining outside.

    Cons

Compensation, bonuses, and performance reviews are becoming more and more opaque. Recent business and billing challengers seem to affect staff-level professionals with seemingly little consequences to leadership, who have the responsibility to be in the market and win work.

    Advice to Management

When time are good, the wealth feels shared. When times are less good, the pain should also feel equally shared.
