I worked at Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects full-time (More than a year)
High powered architects with historical credibility. Storied and reputable firm recognized throughout the architecture industry. Great location on Newbury Street in Boston.
Suffers from management infighting and a reliance on one design on which it based its reputation. Understaffed and as a result projects were not profitable and dragged on. Poor communication at all levels of the organization.
Advice to Management
The company was founded on design, and a managing partner that focused solely on bringing in new projects to allow other partners to focus on design is paramount. The company values good employees but lacks in its ability to land projects - a shame given its brand equity and the quality of its designs. Being part of a storied firm (even one on the downswing) is exhilarating but I never felt that the company was striving to make the next big project - instead, it seemed to live off of its (polarizing) design for Boston City Hall Plaza.
At KMW you get a lot of first hand experience that you would rarely get anywhere else, especially at the intern level.
Very, very small office so sometimes things get slow.
