I worked at Kansas Department of Transportation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The work is worthy, public service is necessary for a good well managed society. May coworkers are dedicated fine folks.

    Cons

Cliquish, nepotism, lack of advancement in pay, failure to properly train.

    Advice to Management

Formerly family friendly policies should be maintained, that perk offset some downsides. State funding cuts have adverse impact.

I have been working at Kansas Department of Transportation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Job Stability Generally relaxed atmosphere Decent pay for Engineers Lots of vacation and sick leave Low expectations

    Cons

Low pay Very high turnover rate Extreme year to year cost increases for mediocre benefits No raises or COLA's (There has been one 5% raise in the last decade) At risk retirement system due to long term underfunding

    Advice to Management

Fix the terrible pay and benefits structure and allow a way to opt out of the severely underfunded KPERS. Weed out terrible senior managers that run off good employees.

I have been working at Kansas Department of Transportation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Very good co-workers who are hard working and dedicated to delivering great services to the Kansas Taxpayers. While pay is low, the work life balance is good and vacation accrual is nice. The opportunity to grow with the job is great. The opportunity to gain technical skills is good. Knowing that I can make a difference in the motoring public is something that I love.

    Cons

Yelling, berating, quick temper, and grilling subordinates in private as well as in public. This is particularly hard to accept because the top IT leader is a political appointee and has no degree, technical experience, or expertise to provide guidance. This is not true of the managers as they are very well educated IT professionals and respectful of the others as well as the work that must be done.

    Advice to Management

Start listening to employees and try being nice for a change. Stop trying to build a coalition of people to oppose the consolidation of shared resources; start supporting centralized IT security; stop complaining about the CITO office and questioning the CITO motives; start looking for the positive outcomes if the CITO is successful; stop trying to make others look bad; stop complaining about administration officials....

I have been working at Kansas Department of Transportation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Meet lots of people Good coworkers Lots of opportunities to learn about construction Pretty busy in the summer months Benefits are good

    Cons

Pay isn't very great Very slow in the winter months Women tend to be looked down upon by the older men working there Snow plow in the winter

    Advice to Management

Most people come in with no prior experience, and other than 3 days worth of book work, we are just thrown in to the field without any further training.

    Pros

Slow paced. Easy to work for. Good boss. Good environment, would work around my hours when I was in college.

    Advice to Management

    Good
