I have been working at Kaplan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly people, talented and hard working. It is great learning experience. One of the best managers I have ever had.

    Cons

Work - life balance is tough. 55 hr work weeks the norm except for month-end, qtr end where it goes up to 70 hrs.

    Advice to Management

Fix system issues and let your employees know that you value them. Do more than a mass email saying thank you.

I worked at Kaplan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits and great facilities.

    Cons

A lot of money spent at the top, while constantly downsizing and eliminating the roles that made the least amount of money, but did all the work. Meanwhile, the top hasn't made any changes, they haven't been strategic and innovative, so there hasn't been any growth.

    Advice to Management

Just eliminating jobs doesn't make money or grow a company, but it does destroy your culture and reputation.

I have been working at Kaplan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, great work-life balance
    Work from home
Some travel but not too much
Genuine desire by upper management to improve quality of products offered

    Cons

Mismatch between my personal philosophy and company mission
HR feels non-existent, lack of clear guidance for how to get help
Benefits are awful - health insurance is limited and expensive, exceptionally low 401K matching (PTO is standard)
IT support is terrible and again almost non-existent, have to troubleshoot everything on my own with no guidance
Feels like a fragmented organization with multiple business units doing their "own thing"
Beware of working with individuals who are micro-managers because they don't know what they are doing

    Advice to Management

Hire some experienced educators in the field to oversee curriculum and content development, MBAs and business-minded people are necessary but so are folks who understand how education works.

    Pros

Kaplan values innovation, so the culture is very flexible and encourages free thinking. While there are departmental silos, Kaplan also has a lot of shared services--this affords you the ability to work in many different areas of the organization and to get a variety of different projects and experiences.

    Cons

Because Kaplan is a culture of innovators, it is also changing. The change can be frenetic and is not always as data driven or well-researched as it may need to be.

Consequently, there are a lot of "tests" at Kaplan--most of which never go in to production (but also never get turned off), so there is a level of disorganization and complexity that makes it difficult to get your job don.
