I have been working at Karl Strauss part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The managers make a great effort to train and hire within. I originally applied to be a server, but the managers suggested I begin as a host so they can set me up for success. At first I didn't understand, but now I wholeheartedly agree on this.

Each manager has their strengths, and together they are a great team.

    Cons

The restaurant can be chaotic. The team needs to work on consistency as far as rules and tasks. The team also needs to work on communication. I love working at the restaurant, honestly the management is really great and I hear that from employees that have been with this particular location since opening.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more consistency as far as training and new information. We recently were told to not to do something, and not all the hosts understood that so when a guest called and one host said no and the other says yes, the first host looks like they aren't helpful and the second host looks like the hero.

I have been working at Karl Strauss part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Busy restaurant, room to grow, management and coworkers care about you, required steps of service set you up for success and consistency with your guests. Free beer!

    Cons

Upper management is disconnected from what really goes on in the restaurant despite frequent "secret shoppers" and other reports. Claim to follow Danny Meyer's "Setting the Table" but they don't adopt the most important aspects like avoiding fear based management and taking care of your employees first. The family environment mentioned in the pros is exclusive to the restaurant you work at.

    Advice to Management

Upper management, please take time to at least learn your employees names, especially if you are going to sit in their section.

    Pros

Absolutely fantastic company that treats its employees great! Great dental, decent health and mediocre 401k matching. On boarding is fantastic as you spend a week or two at many different locations and with many different departments. Plus 50% off at all restaurants.

    Cons

The downside to this company is definitely its management and direction. They can be too laid back at times and cant really figure out if they are a restaurant that makes beer or a brewery that serves food.

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to back peddle on the micromanaging, where nothing gets accomplished, and put more trust in your employees.

I worked at Karl Strauss full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Family like atmosphere with co-workers, hours are good at most locations, tastings of beer and food, selling contests, good culture

    Cons

takes new employees a long time to work up to good shifts, managers play favorites, corporate rules and bureaucratics apply

    Advice to Management

Managers are moved to different locations much too often, it's like musical chairs. Huge disruptions within the restaurant occur as a result. Limit these transfers to only when necessary.

    Pros

Free Shift beer, beer training, fairly easy job with a flexible schedule. Casual, friendly atmosphere, employee discounts on food and beer.

    Cons

3 weeks of extensive training, aggressive and somewhat hostile Sr. management, servers with seniority get all of the good shifts. Servers with seniority order newer employees around. Many unpleasant employees at this location. Mediocre tips. Secret shopper reports constantly.

    Advice to Management

Better organization and communication needed. Employees would be happier and have higher morale if upper management treated employees with respect. Give employees constructive criticism, and in a private setting.
