    I worked at Kennametal full-time

    Pros

Great location; relatively fair pay; most coworkers were great

    Cons

Shaky environment/job security, which lead to the lack of a potential bonus; volatile industry; lack of educational opportunities/travel; constant change became very distracting; too many jobs are outsourced

    Advice to Management

While Kennametal was a stable company with a great reputation at one point, that has definitely changed over the past few years. All of the restructuring and layoffs have completely changed the working environment, and not for the better. Employees with the most knowledge (and naturally, highest pay) were shown the door, leaving the younger and less experienced employees scrambling for resources with nowhere to go. Ron DeFeo may be a very honest guy when it comes to the future of the company, but I do not think he has the slightest idea of what will happen to the industry over the next few years, and imagine there will only be more mass layoffs.

The day-to-day work here was manageable, but don't even think about asking for opportunities for career growth. First of all, the organization has been so flattened that there are no opportunities unless you are willing to relocate or change departments altogether. Second, in order to learn about the company and make yourself a better employee, you'll need to look outside of your immediate group. Simply asking for help won't do you much good, because the small number of people who are left after the last big layoff are too swamped to help out. And forget about traveling--there's no way that will get approved due to cost.

One of the things that bothered me the most personally was how Kennametal preaches innovation and diversity, but management does not practice what they preach. The competitors, despite the same market conditions, usually have the upper hand and continue to dominate.

I can't speak of other locations, but at mine, there was a lot of backwards thinking--including racism, ageism, etc. I truly worry for the future of this company. They tried to move to Pittsburgh to attract young talent, but I did not witness a single real attempt to attract and retain progressive-thinking millennials. You can only lay off so many baby boomers before you're left with a skeleton crew.

    Pros

Flexible and interesting work, and varies day to day

    Cons

Hire old team lead back into manage group

I have been working at Kennametal full-time

    Pros

Great people scattered throughout the company.

    Cons

Corporate streamlining/outsourcing has left many locations without reliable soft resources like HR and IT support, accounting and EHS

Chaotic business structure: clear divide between the cutting tool business and everything else

Bloated reporting and performance metrics that dont work well with the different kinds of products made

    Advice to Management

Value your employees regardless of how high on the ladder they are. Make efforts to boost morale instead of pushing harder and reward people for putting in the extra effort instead of expecting everyone to give 150% 100% of the time.

I worked at Kennametal as a contractor

    Pros

Friendly coworkers, mostly. Interesting mix of machines from the last 100 years. Lot of good tribal knowledge in long time employees.

    Cons

Some maintenance individuals are lazy or just insecure, and spend more time trying to protect "their" domains and activities than actually work to repair down equipment. Individuals in question spend more time hiding behind the union rules and required break times. If the individuals were actually useful, they would have moved on to better jobs a long time ago.

Also an OSHA visit would probably end up shutting down the facility for a couple of weeks to fix the multitude of safety issues related to the leaking oil systems and electrical violations.

Usual union politics. Senior members twist rules to get easier jobs while better qualified members get paid less.

    Advice to Management

Bite the bullet, pay better wages to get motivated employees.

I have been working at Kennametal full-time

    Pros

The earnings are above average for the area.

    Cons

Bad management, thus less than ideal working environment. Seniority (those about to retire) dictate production and procedure. Makes for a hostile work relationship. Management vs. floor personnel is disconnected.

    Advice to Management

OPEN door policy needs to be realized and validated.

I worked at Kennametal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is a TON of upside for talented people. It's definitely not a place where you have to suck up to be recognized, just work hard and you'll be noticed.

    Cons

This company is incredibly cheap when it comes to support resources. They want to be a real player in the market, but they won't hire anyone to help. One supervisor for 75 people? Sure! 5 engineers for a plant of 300 people and 14 different processes that have little to no overlap? You're over staffed! 1 hr person for that same plant? Are you sure you really need them?

Also, financial goals are based on hopes and dreams rather than rooted in anything that resembles reality. That's not good...

    Advice to Management

Spend the money needed to improve your processes and you'll get back to where you want to be. Also, putting pressure on your staff to meet unrealistic goals (5% productivity improvement on day one of the fiscal year, and 8% after that without any capital investment for instance) is bad for retention. Fix those things and you'll be fine. Refuse and you'll be working for Sandvik.

    Advice to Management

get rid of some of your senior management and get someone in place who has an interest to save the company and not only wants to fill his/ her pockets
